Problem scaning mail with the bat and avast 4.5!

avast 4.5 don’t scan mail inbound and outbound… have you the same problem? and a solution!!!
thanks a lot!

Hi and welcome to the forums , if you look around this is a common problem being experienced by lots of people ,its changed in new version in that incoming mail now doesnt need to be directed via avast so its just a matter of altering your settings in mail program as if avast didnt exist and scanning should work

Thanks but the mail are not directed via avast, i have changed the rules…

Is the Bat Provider/Plug-in enabled after the update?

yes…and the bat preferences are also ok I think… (pic)

the plugin doesn’t seem to work correctly anymore in 4.5 …

in the previous version the plugin moved the infected mail to the Quarantine folder (or whatever you set up as action), but now it unpacks the mail in the ‘temp’ folder and then the On-access Protection warns you there is a virus on your hard-disk ?!?!

is this a known/confirmed bug ???

Yes it is… :-[
Can you exclude the temp folder from the Standard Shield scanning?
If you don’t feel confortable with this, maybe you can wait for an update that fix this ::slight_smile:

OK, thanks. hope they solve it soon.

Can you exclude the temp folder from the Standard Shield scanning? If you don't feel confortable with this, maybe you can wait for an update that fix this ::)
I can exclude it, but if the plugin isn't working either, the mail will not be scanned at all !!

You’re right… But I can’t understand why the pluggin is not working?
Did you follow David’s suggestions?
If you are sure the plugin is not working, it would be better does not exclude that temp folder until the problem is solved in your computer.

To see if avast! is scanning emails, check one of these points:

  1. Is the avast icon (the special one of email scanning) be shown in the system tray?

  2. Is your email header with the lines X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0XXX-X, XX/XX/2004), Inbound message and X-Antivirus-Status: Clean? (Right click the message, choose Properties and Details)

  3. Are clean notes added at the bottom of the email? (Internet Mail provider settings)

  1. the TheBat plugin does not show that icon ;I only see it when I use other programs that are scanned by the On-Access Internet Mail scanner …

  2. no … I put on logging for the plug-in and will keep an eye on it to see if it scans mail at all.

  3. that feature is also not used by the plug-in ; but I get those lines using other e-mail clients (Thunderbird for getting IMAP) scanned by On-Access

this is in the TheBat plugin AvBatEx.log :

11.12.2004 18:32:20: BAV_Initialize: avast! plug-in initialized successfully

12.12.2004 00:01:49: Testing D:\DOCUME~1\Rob\LOCALS~1\Temp\BAT15C.tmp
*
12.12.2004 00:01:49: x_ScanFile: ScanReal failed!
*

and this in the Avast Warning.log :

12/12/2004 12:01:34 AM 1102806094 SYSTEM 604 Sign of "Win32:Sober-H [Wrm]" has been found in "D:\DOCUME~1\Rob\LOCALS~1\Temp\BAT15C.tmp" file.
12/12/2004 12:01:50 AM 1102806110 SYSTEM 604 Sign of "Win32:Sober-H [Wrm]" has been found in "D:\Program Files\The Bat\MAIL\Marlena\ATTACH\re_mail_6669.zip" file.

looks like the plugin puts the message in the ‘temp’ dir to scan it and then the On-Access scan jumps in and prevents the plug-in from checking it … then the attachment is put in the TheBat attachments-dir. and On-Access scan again jumps in !

I really hope the Avast team does something about this bug ; the plug-in worked just great in the previous version !!!

edit : until a fix comes, I removed the plugin from TheBat so that the mail gets scanned by the normal On-Access Internet Mail scanner … works OK.
