Help, I have been using a photo program for man years Irfanviewer, it seems that Avast and Irfanviewer have a problem. When you try to delete a file (jpg) in Irfanviewer the program response with program not responding and you can not close the program. The only way to close the program is to reboot. I have shut down the services for Avast and Irfanviewer works just like it is suppose to. I repaired Avast, same problem. I removed and installed a new copy of both Avast and Irfanviewer with the same results. After removing Avast and restarting Irfanviewer worked up until I installed Avast. I even installed the new beta version of Avast…same problem. Could someone tell me why these two programs can’t play together?
No problem with irfanview here, see image, clicked yes and poof, gone, removed from explorer files location but remains in the Irfanview window. Close irfanview, no problem, all working as expected.
What version are you using for avast and for Irfanview?
I’m using Irfanview 3.97.
Thanks for the reply. I am using Irfanviewer 3.97 and Avast 4.6.691.
IrfanView works just perfect here… no problems with avast! nor any other application and I use it since the very first day it came out (guy from my old country ex.Yugoslavia made it btw).
Latest version of IrfanView installed 3.97, avast! Pro beta build 4.6.726
What operating system do you use?
Does it help if you stop the Standard Shield provider? What are your settings of the Standard Shield? (Do you have any blocked operations on the “Blocker” page of Standard Shield configuration?)
I am using XP SP2 I am out of the office at the time and will check the block later today. Do you know of any other thing that might be an area that I might check?
I have reviewed all of start up files, services, and etc. Using Hi jack I was unable to find any program that was not suppose to be in the system. The process that happens is I open Irfranviewer select a picture, click on delete, the window saying do you want to delete pops up I click yes and the window showing the file being delete is not displayed then the program just freezes.
Maybe you can download, install and use (it’s a very useful application) Unlocker.
You can see what process is ‘blocking’ the file to be deleted.

Or perhaps you could try a program that was featured in
the Nov 4 '05 issue of Spyware Weekly Newsletter called
“WhoLockMe” available at www.dr-hoiby.com/WhoLockMe ?
Thanks again for the help. I did not find a files or programs that were locked except IE when it was running. I also found that Paint Shop Pro 8 had the same problem of not beginable to delete, move or do any thing with a JPG file. All actions resulted in not being able to shut the program down. When I rebooted the file was deleted.
I Microsoft photo editor seems to work you can delete files. I removed Avast and every program works without a problem.
Can you think of anything else I can try?
Did you change avast! settings? Or use the default ones?
Specially: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=17320.msg147406#msg147406
So, what happens if you stop the Standard Shield (e.g. using the context menu of avast! tray icon)? Does it help?
What if you don’t stop it, but just pause it?
Btw, are the files you are trying to delete on your local disk, or on network?
I used the default setting.
The files are on a local C and D drive. I have stopped the different items in Avast! one at a time and two at a time and I still have the same problem. I checked Photo shop last night and it failed the same way.
Are you saying that even when you stop all avast! resident providers, the problem is still present? ???
Bill, just to guess, but did you use Norton Antivirus in your computer?
Igor’s thought makes sense, whitout the providers running (specially Standard Shield), avast! could even handle the files and, for sure, shouldn’t block the deletion.
Yes, but I was in a big hurry as I had promised to get a CD of my latest photo’s I had taken.
I believe that I shut all of the processes down after a failure so I probaly did not do a very good job of troubleshooting.
I do know for a fact that if I shut down the services (services.msc) for Avast! I do not have the problem. The problem doesn’t happen in Safe Mode either.
Any suggestions or things you would like me to try?
Well, as I said - try to stop the Standard Shield provider only and let us know if it helps.
If yes, try to run it again and just pause it.
Here is a little more information on the problem. I believe that the problem with the photo programs is just the results of something else. I was so intent on using the photo programs to see the problem I decide to see what happens if I don’t start the photo programs. The first thing that I notice is that IE would stop loading sometimes and just freeze, the second loading of IE was OK. Next I notice that I didn’t start any programs the computer would not shut down and everytime. If unloaded Avast! everything worked. Does this help at all?
Yes, but I might have done my testing incorrectly as the problem already happen before I had turned off all the shields.
I went back to basic trouble shooting and found that with causing the problem XP would not shut down and to be hard booted to get going again. Removing Avast! every program and shutting down all work as normal.
Any suggestions???
