I lose my internet connection every 1 or 2 hours since the last avast update. To connect again I have to restart my modem. When I contacted my internet supplier I was told it could be for 2 reasons: 1. my cable modem needed to be replaced or 2. some software was blocking my internet connection, namely antivirus type software. The guy I talked to told me to see if it was my antivirus fault (due to an update or something) before asking them to come and replace my modem, because if there’s no problem with my modem they will charge me the deslocation costs.
I never had this problem before and the only thing different in my computer is the avast update! So, what can possibly be wrong with avast?
Do you mean completely lose or it becomes slow?
avast can’t disconnect or connect…
I don’t think is your modem fault either… but you’ll need to know more about how to check your network settings and hardware to solve it by yourself… :
I mean I completely lose it. And it won’t “come back” until I unplug and plug again the feed cable of my modem. But then I lose the connection again within a few hours.
I don’t think it’s my modem’s fault. I think it’s something with avast because I only noticed this problem when I started my laptop after coming back from vacations. Shortly after starting my computer the avast window said avast had been updated. That’s when I began to have this problem. My internet connection was fine before going on vacations.
can avast block connectivity? 'cause I think that’s what is hapenning.
Specifically, not…
avast is an antivirus and can’t block.
But if a firewall blocks it, then you can think it is the one which is blocking the access.
If you disable WebShield provider, could you connect?
Well, the last avast update should have ‘corrected’ a problem with the ‘server.def’ file… it should not bring other problems to the scenario… :
I don’t know how disabling the webshield can help me.
I have internet if I unplug and then plug back the modem feed cable. The problem is that after some time I lose connectivity. Sometimes I lose connectivity after half an hour, sometimes is after 4/5 hours, though most times it’s 1 or 2 hours.
The computer doesn’t detect it immediately (the warning message doesn’t appear right after I lose connectivity). I notice that I lose connecivity because the light that registers cable activity in my modem stops. Also, I have a P2P program running and when I lose connectivity it doesn’t detect it immediately, too. I mean, I stop downloading/uploading, but I don’t get the message “disconnected from server” until later.
If it’s not avast causing this, what is it?
I don’t think it has anything to do with avast!. If the modem disconnects “randomly”, it sounds like a problem with the network in your area (or maybe on the providers side).
But the network in my area is working fine, according to my internet provider. And my signal is fine, too. They told me it was either my modem malfunctioning or a program blocking the connectivity (antivirus type program).
Well, could be a malfunctioning modem, but I’d rather bet on the connection.
Antivirus (or more likely firewall) -like program could block the connection, but the block would be permanent - you couldn’t access the network at all since starting the computer. If the modem works for an hour and then disonnects, it’s most likely something else.
I had someone look at my computer and he said I have no programs that could block connectivity (I guess that includes avast ).
My Internet provider says there are no network problems in my area and that my signal is good (I made another call to the support line to check it again).
Can anyone think of what else may be causing this (apart from the modem malfunctioning)?
Thanks!
Are you using a router or just the cable modem direct to the computer? You said you were running a P2P program which I have had the same problem as you with some routers… Linksys, Trendnet and some others. The router thinks that the constant ping from the P2P program is either “Ping Flooding” or a DDOS (denial of service attack) and blocks the connection thinking it’s being hacked. This is most likely your problem if you use a router.
I’m not using a router. I tried the modem in my old computerand I had the same problem. I think it must be the modem then.
I think I’m going to ask my internet provider to replace my modem (it’s their modem after all…)
Thanks all for your help!
I didn’t call support again after all. I think it was emule’s fault! It was not configured propperly…
Sorry for blaming avast… :-[
And again thanks all for your help!
Even this… strange… emule reseting the connection?
Is there anything related to its new ‘obfuscating’ feature?
