Today I saw Avast update itself from version 080522-0 to lower version 0805221-0. Then I updated again and it got back to 080522-0, and then I tried again, to see what happens and it has updated back to 0805221-0. How is this possible?

Are you sure, that that was the version number?
I always thought the version number would be YYMMDD-X (YY = Year; MM = Month; DD = Day; X = 0, 1, 2 depending on how much updates are released per day)
probably a problem with the update server ???
I have no idea what is happening on your system, it certainly didn’t happen on mine and with 080522-0 a manual update shows up to date.
What is in the avast log viewer, Notice section show for your auto updates ?
You should see a process of updates in chronological order and what the VPS update was, that should follow on from the previous updates.
Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
