Problem with updating avast

Yesterday I responded to the avast (free) expiration notices and upgraded it by getting a new license key via email. After the upgrade process I got the message that the key installation was successful. But I notice today still messages that my avast subscription is about to expire. Can someone tell me how I can resolve this problem. Should I have uninstalled something before? (Compaq laptop w XP2)

Thanks,

See the tutorial: http://www.avast.com/files/tutorials/insert_key.htm

What is the error message?
Is your system date/time correct?
Do you use copy & paste method?
Are you sure you do not include the ‘last blank space’ in the paragraph while copying & pasting?

If nothing helps, I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

Thanks for the quick response. I don’t really have any error messages except “Your subscription is about to expire”, and a smaller red panel that pops up at the bottom left telling me essentially the same thing. I just repeated the procedure. I just repeated the procedure with the same results as before. I do not know what you mean by “the last blank space in the paragraph”. Do you mean that I should not swipe more than the exact count of digits in the license key? Why would it tell me “the license key was installed successfully”? In any event, if this does not work I will follow your reinstallation procedure.

Thanks again,
ebvt

I think so…

Are you the only administrator in this computer or, on contrary, there are other users with admin rights?

I’m the only administrator, one other user…

Please, post the last 300-350 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

See image example of copying a space after the key, if you cut and paste you could pick up a space after the registration key.

If it said the key installed successfully then that would effectively mean that you didn’t copy a space, or it would probably have reported an invalid key.

Thank you DavidR, I will go to the reinstall before the contradictory statements on the system drive me nuts. This is the first time I have been on this board and I am impressed with how fast questions are being answered. I have a few days left for the change. Thanks to all…
