I have Avast4 Home installed on an XP machine; due to problems with the update I have ( as suggested in a thread on this site) uninstalled Avast and given it a complete fresh install; however, it still refuses to update; previous updates took maybe a few minutes if not quicker but presently it seems to take forever or does nothing ???
Is there a problem with the update site or with Avast itself ? and is so what is Avast doing about it please?
Why are you still using such an outdated version of avast :o you wont get much support help here for such old versions as no one uses it anymore which makes it very hard to troubleshoot.
Use the avast uninstaller utility (follow the instructions). After you used that tool, run this tool in normal mode. Tool name is Avast Cleanup Tool from here http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/
After this tool cleans up avast folders and files restart your computer manually. After that download and install a fresh new copy of Avast.
Thanks for the replies; I have managed to update the engine and virus definitions but I did wonder if the update site is not available at week ends?
As Craigb stated, why are you using v4? That will be discontinued soon IIRC. The latest version is v9 and it can detect more malware than v4.
Has anyone else got update probelms as I seem to have got a no response currently from the Avast update site

What do you mean by no response currently from avast update site? All previous versions of avast 7 and below is not supported by Avast.
