What is your OS ?
What version of Outlook are you using ?
Operating system restart needed by avast message - First check the contents of the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.log file, which should show you why it thinks the reboot is needed.
This may be solved, in some systems, by deleting the file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\reboot.txt. With the avast self-defence module it will complain so disable that first, Program Settings, Troubleshooting.
If that doesn’t resolve it check this:
You can also check this registry entry (right after computer restart):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager, if it contains “PendingFileRenameOpertaions”.
Check its contents and if there’s only “reboot.txt” from avast4\setup folder, delete PendingFileRenameOperations, don’t delete any other key.
Back-up (export) the registry key before you edit/delete, just in case.
If none of the above resolves it, then it may be better to do a clean reinstall.
I hope someone can help. I have the latest version of Avast home and it keeps popping up a window on the screen that tells me the scanning status. When I load Internet Explorer it pops up showing the files it is scanning, in email, same thing… I know that I believe before the update to 4.8, I think, it did not do that before. The ball spins at the bottom right which is normal and it pops up when I get updated DAT files, etc., but this is something new. Maybe I clicked a setting I should not have, not sure, but again, it’s getting annoying that every time I do anything, it comes up with a window showing the scanned files, etc…
PLEASE HELP…
Thank you… Also, your program is great!!! I catches things way before they get into the computer… EXCELLENT JOB!!!
It seems that you’ve changed the avast settings without knowing what you were doing…
This is an option disabled by default. You can turn it off going to the Standard Shield provider settings, Advanced tab an unchecking ‘Show detailed information on action performed’. You can do this for the other providers too.

Welcome to avast. The most configurable antivirus around 8)
The best thing would have been not to enable this function which is disabled by default.
Standard Shield > Customize > Advanced - ‘Show detailed info on performed actions’ this option is off by default, so it would appear you have been tweaking avast without knowing the effect it will have.
This function is also on the Web Shield and Internet Mail providers so you should also check those.
