I used Avast 4.8 for awhile and loved it, even moved from the free version to the pro version. Had an issue last year and ended up reformatting my machine. Now I have a new machine and just installed the latest 5.0 free version. My machine is 3.2ghz with 2gig of memory and streaming content was flawless until I installed 5.0. I’d like to find a resolution to this rather than uninstall Avast as it’s my favorite antivirus program.
While streaming videos from youtube/break/CBS/Fox… or any other streaming site, the sound is choppy and garbled. If I pause it and allow the file to completely buffer first, it sounds fine. If I disable Avast before going to the media, it also plays fine - so I know it’s Avast that is causing the issue. I re-enable Avast and refresh the media and the garbled sound returns.
Is there any settings within Avast or anything I can do to keep the streaming content coming in fluidly? I know I need the protection, but it shouldn’t be so strong as to prevent streaming audio. Oh, I also have a cable connection with download speeds of 15Mb and upload of 3Mb, so I know it’s definitely not my connection (also keep in mind with Avast disabled, all streaming is perfect).
Hey, long time avast! user, just registered to say that I have the exact same thing happening to me with avast! 5. Turn off all shields and it stream sounds fine. Also appears to happen with any webpage that has java in it. I’m listening music through Winamp and I load a website with java and almost instantly my music starts to become garbled.
PC Specs: Intel P4 3.0 GHz, 2GB RAM, 500 GB Western Digital HD, Windows XP Professional, Realtek AC97 Audio, nVidia 7800 GS AGP video card. If you anyone needs any more info let me know!
Update: Just updated to the latest java version and it seemed to have gotten drastically better (although I did disable the shields and reenable them). Still some skipping in the sound of streaming videos.
I found out that if I go into the “Real Time Shields” settings and disable JUST the behavioral shield, the problem goes away. But now I have a shiny little exclamation point in my task bar telling me that my system isn’t fully protected anymore. Hopefully there is another way around this other than disabling needed features!
FWIW - I went into add/remove programs, highlighted Avast and chose to “change/remove” - then I chose the option to change components. I unchecked behavior shield and hit ok. After reboot, this option is no longer in Avast, and all the streaming sites work perfectly. Now, my question is, removing this option is leaving me open to what? I’m unsure as to what this option even does. In the help file when you choose the behavior shield option there is nothing there other than “no settings for this feature” or something to that effect.
Watching ANY kind of video is now impossible…And my connection is great (30mb).
When I try without behaviour shield, it works perfectly, but when I activate it, the videos lag, so do my other applications. Also, on speedtest, my connection goes from 28.90mb to 8mb.
Is there a patch on the way to correct this please?
Try to disable webshield or add exception to File System Shield (for that program). WebShield cuts 50% off my connection speed (Speedtest), so it might need some tweaking.
