Ive just re-downloaded avast after using norton antivirus for a while and deciding to go back to avast. But now, when it tries to update i get a message saying it cannot connect to download905.avast.com. I have added avast setup to my firewall thingy so it shouldnt be blocking it. I dont know whats going on! Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved! Thanks in advance!

What is your operating system (version of Windows) and how did you go about uninstalling Norton?
If just through “Add/Remove Programs,” please uninstall avast using this utility…

Then download the uninstall tool from Norton and run it…

Then download and install a fresh copy of avast.

Over and above ensuring the remnants of Norton spit have been removed.
What is your firewall thingy called ?
If it does allow avast.setup delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

Ardvarkm when i click the “download” bit on that page about uninstalling norton it opens and new window and says “this program cannot display this page” Any ideas what happening? sorry to be so annoying!
OK I visited the link and after selecting a version of Norton, it displays the instruction page, scrolling down to the download link. I click that and the new window opens, but only for a short time, it then changes into a download save option, if I click Save File it will be downloaded and saved to my default downloads location.
I’m using firefox and the above process appears to be working correctly, what browser are you using ?

Im windows xp using internet explorer. Even when i click that last link when i get to the bit where it says its now downloading it quickly changes to cannot display page! I dont know whats wrong. Very annoying!
All 3 Links work with Firefox + NS.
I did not try IE as I do not Trust it to go to the Bathroom.

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?
