Bob, i think you can get anti-shock boxes, i have never seen one but im told they sit in front of your pc, sort of like a gate way and block high voltage, but this might just be a rumer.

I have 2 of them. Let me refraze that, I now have 2 new ones.
The last ones also got fried. 
Mabey consider investing in getting ones that can block more lighning :P, or complain they they didn’t block it like they should of :-.

I’m having problems updating too. I get the message during the time that it is trying to update: Error cannot connect to server. When it is done trying I get this information:
Network error or maintenance
HTTP proxy settings are incorrect
Network settings incorrect
Firewall isn’t set to full internet access for program “Avast*.setup”
What should I do?
i got the same messages … and admit general stupidity :-.. does this mean i have a browser hijacker? :

Back from holidays, I didn’t have time to thank Technical for his answer, although my problem is not solved even if I added AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=60 in the .INI file, but thanks anyway. Must have something to do with ZA.
Madeline, you must have a firewall that blocks the access to the Net to some programs like avast, should be in the firewall settings and maybe you should check the properties of your Internet program by right-clicking on it and try to see if the connexion part is OK. Well, I know nothing really but I think the problem might be in the settings of your firewall and your Internet program. But someone more informed will soon solve your problem : such is the avast forum ! 8)

This is sad but a lot of troubles are related to the last version (5) of Zone Alarm
Can you try changing your firewall to Sygate or Agnitum Outpost.
