hmm…my avast! has problems downloading the updates. It says that the server is down!..can anyone help me out with this?

Does this apply to you? If you don’t use Zone Alarm which firewall do you use.
does it happen before?..check your proxy settings?
I have the same problem also, though my Zone Alarm settings are Ok concerning the avast! authorizations to get on the web. I’m running Win XP SP1 and for the moment, I have to update the program manually. Please let me know if you solve your problem ! :-[ sorry for bothering.
Ooops… I should have read further before inquiring. Just set the third program Ashdisp.exe to have ZA’s authorization to get on the web. Hopefully avast!4 will work now. Thank you Delta and Techie101, and everyone ! :-[ :-[ :-\ ;D
If that doesn’t work,
Use ZA 4.5
Strange, ashdisp.exe (the ‘icon’ on the system tray) should not ask for authorization…
Never asked for me and everything is working (XP SP1+) :
What are the three programs asking for authorization?

Windows ME with Avast 4.1.418 and the only program needing to connect to the web for updates is Avast.setup.
Doesn’t ZA also ask to verify running programs?
Doesn’t ZA also ask to verify running programs?
Hmmm… I guess it will ask for loopback. (or whatever ZA calls it; it’s been a long time since I used ZA.) But Malka stated that ashdisp.exe needed to connect to the web so I just assumed that ashdisp.exe was actually trying to make an internet connection.
Doesn’t ZA also ask to verify running programs?
Not should… unless you are in a local network and ZA level set to ‘high’. Then the programs running in your computer will be consider as any other running from the LAN.
Generally, ZA asks only for access to Internet (not LAN) and server rights.
Neither of them are needed for ashdisp.exe to be executed… :-\
Well, really sorry :-[ for the misunderstanding : I MANUALLY authorized ashdisp.exe to gain access to the web, because I checked the link in Delta’s reply#1, which led me to Techie101’s reply#1 to zk, in which he defines the 3 programs that must be granted access. As I saw that only ashmaisv.exe and avastsetup were set so in ZA ( version 4.5.594, should’nt it work with this one ? ), I thought I had made a mistake somewhere… I also checked the avast.INI file and I noticed it was a bit different from what was indicated : instead of having AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=30 after AssumeAlwaysConnected=1,I have[Quick]
EnableSkins=1 (although it is set on =0 after RespondTimeout=30 ???)
InfectionExitApp=1
ShowResults=1
and I can’t seem to be able to find AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=30 anywhere in the whole file.
Well, I resolved to update avast manually as it made my currently running program ( a game ) crash when it notified the error. I’m so glad this is not a virus , anyway ! Thank you everyone for your kind help and concern, I really do appreciate. I’ll try to get some further information if I can.
…Oh, by the way, my ZA level is set to high and in the " connexions ( french word, is the english the same ? )" area in XP, there are 2 parts : 1.Distant Access ( mine is with Wanadoo and an ADSL modem ) and 2.Local Network ( LAN ? ) and Internet High-Speed Connection . There is there a Via Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter, which program I put in the secure section of ZA. But its IP is 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0, which means it doesn’t work, does it? I don’t have a LAN connection, if it is what I think it is ( enterprise or domestic network ). And it seems to me the problems definitely started a little time after installing ZA v.4.5.954… But if the server is down for avast, would this mean that ZA makes it “mistake” the part1 for the part2 ( even though the update addresses in the .INI file are allright ) or is this a VERY stupid question ?
Malka, if you have a DSL connection to Internet, please, make sure you add AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=60 after the line AssumeAlwaysConnected=1.
This way you will wait 60 seconds after a connection is detected to update avast. If you have a ‘stressed’ boot (many programs loading…) this could make it work.

Thanks Technical
You just solved one of my problems for the second time.
But a crash came inbetween the first and second time. ;D
If that doesn't work, Use ZA 4.5
Why does everyone keep saying that, surely the older version won’t be able to block as many hacks/viruses, i never had any problems with the new one on my Win98SE

hacks/viruses arent the only things to make a system fail. Mine had lightning do a number on it even though I have protection against that sort of thing. It still happened.

Firewalls protect against lightning?
I thought you could get then anti-shock box things?

I was hoping you had found a new version or something that did exactly that. Lightning and I don’t get along very well.
