My version of norton ran out, and instead of instantly buying a new one, I uninstalled it, ran through the removal tool from symantecs website (I know how much it can cling for dear life)
Restarts a few times
Install avast home version, all seems fine, restart and woah!
Now various different program icons do not exist anymore
The programs still work fine, but it is very unsightly, and as a precaution I uninstalled avast and ran the system restore tool
Unfortunately the tool has not brought back my icons (which was a long shot), now I could probably go to the effort of installing the programs again, to fix any minor bugs, and that wouldn’t be so much of a problem, that is unless system files icons hadn’t changed as well
It may seem like something little, and it really is, but it looks so damn ugly, and this is a newly formatted and re-installed computer
No other programs have been changed, so it must be a conflict between avast and something on my computer or vica versa, all I would like to know is
How can I restore these icons without a format and re-installation of everything?
If you try to find a new C:\Windows\system32\SHELL32.dll file and substitute yours, will it work?
Tweak programs like X-Setup has a ‘reset’ icon customization that could help. Unfortunatelly, it’s a shareware.
Do you have Icon Packager in your system?
After that, click on REPAIR NOW button on the right side. Make sure REBUILD ICONS states inside that little box in the middle of the window.
Click OK and restart your computer just to be sure… see if those icons are restored.
If not, it could be that some system files responsible for icons handling are damaged/corrupt…
Cheers !
EDIT: IO just noticed you already have POWERTOYS By Microsoft installed. If it’s complete installation, you should have TweakUI already in your system… So use it and follow my advice from this reply…
Do not worry at all, it’s nothing unusual… sometimes it just happens. Most of the times it happens during the improper uninstallation of some program. It doesn’t have to be your fault of course, it could be caused by sh*ty Norton uninstallation utilities.
The good thing, it’s easily solved with REBUILD ICON CASHE or RESTORE ICONS… but as you said, most important is - no harm done.
