Can you simply right click the avast! icon in the taskbar & utilize “update program” feature & reboot (like I just did) or do I need to remove the older version to properly install this 4.7.936?

Nope, no need to remove old version as avast! is fully updatable. You did the right way 
RejZor is fully right.
Although, the last version 4.7.936 won’t upgrade on Windows 9x to the new, correct one. At least, this is being reported by some users.
In this case, maybe you have to download the full setup.exe file and run it. Maybe uninstall and install again…
