provider is waiting for a subsystem to start.

I am trying to install Avast on my new laptop (it worked on my old one just fine). The new one is running the same OS, XP Pro. But when I start this one up, Avast gives me an error message that says it will not protect incoming mail, web, etc.

When I open Avast On Access Scanner, it tells me that Web Shield and Outlook/Exchange are both not active: “provider is waiting for a subsystem to start.”

I understand that Outlook/Exchange won’t be active until those programs are open.

But how do I get Web Shield Active?

Any easy fixes? Or hard ones, for that matter?

do or did you use any other security software? (antivirus, firewall,…)

you could try to do a repair of you avast-installation (via the control panel → ad/remove software)

How is avast Web Shield service set to be started? Automatically?

Thanks for your quick replies!

I’m also using McAfee Total Protection Service, and windows firewall.

I’m not sure how to tell if avast Web Shield service is set to be started automatically- do you know how?

The use of another resident AV (McAfee) is no doubt causing the problem.

Having two resident scanners installed is not recommended as rather than provide twice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable.

You have to make a choice on which AV you are going to use and uninstall the other as even when disabled they can still conflict as the resident AV loads low level virtual device drivers. This is how they intercept file to scan them before they are executed/modified/saved and it is this function that can conflict.

How are set your avast! services?
Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

I suppose you have to have four avast! services:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner service)

The two first of them should be Automatic loaded and the two last Manually loaded.

But, for sure, David is pointing the real problem: the second antivirus…

Sometimes, McAfee won’t be completely removed if, before, you do not uninstall Avast, including the use of its “Uninstall Application” if necessary (www.avast.com/eng/faq-install-uninstall-avast.html).

Thank you both very much. I believe this solves my problem!

No problem, glad I could help.

Welcome to the forums.

Glad you’ve finally has avast running ok
