quarantine for trojan

hello

good morning

after a scan, Avast tells me that a trojan “Win 32 small-ERH AOO17687.exe C:\system volume information…” has been found on my machine and asks me to send it in the Quarantine folder…
that is what I have done
but can I delete this file without any risk ?

thank you for your answer

You have done the right thing, ‘first do no harm’ don’t delete, send virus to the chest and investigate.

There is no rush to delete anything from the chest, a protected area where it can do no harm. Anything that you send to the chest you should leave there for a few weeks. If after that time you have suffered no adverse effects from moving these to the chest, scan them again (inside the chest) and if they are still detected as viruses, delete them.

The c:\System Volume Information folder is a part of the system restore function and as such is protected by windows, so avast may not be able to move the infected restore point, so a secondary scan of just the c:\System Volume Information folder will confirm if avast has been able to move it to the chest, if not see below.

The only way to clean infected _restore points is to disable system restore and reboot. This will clear ALL _restore points. Once you have disabled system restore, reboot, scan your PC again and if clear enable system restore.

Welcome to forums.
Shortly, files into that folder could be deleted without risk.
Of course, David’s suggestions are more cautious and better.

I also suggest you run a boot time scanning with avast and send the infected files to Chest, as David suggested.

Thank you DavidR and Tech for your help

when you use the word “chest” you mean the quarantine folder ?
excuse my poor english

No problem, welcome to the forums.

Yes it is quarantine, avast calls it the Chest, in keeping with the nautical, pirate, theme as avast! is also a nautical term.

avast Nautical Used as a command to stop or desist.

It’s not a poor English, just that avast uses - differently of other antivirus, I don’t know why - another word for Quarantine.
I have used the Quarantine translation in Portuguese (Brazil) translation of avast and not the word for Chest (human body part).

I have used the Quarantine translation in Portuguese (Brazil) translation of avast and not the word for Chest (human body part).

Or a large trunk (not a body part) like the icon for ashChest.exe, the Chest is associated with a Pirates Treasure Chest, locked up secure, in the same way avast was a common Nautical term used by or associated to Pirates. The same in the updates you will notice Jollyroger in some of the names, the JollyRoger was the flag of the Pirates.

Unfortunately these associations get lost in translation. And every one knows what Quarantine is and shouldn’t get lost in translation.

This is the first acception of the word in Portuguese.
There isn’t any acception for pirates treasure or any nautical term as far I know in Portuguese.

chest (chst)
n.

  1. The part of the body between the neck and the abdomen, enclosed by the ribs and the breastbone; the thorax.

That is why I said the alternative meanings and associations get lost in translation. There are other alternatives for chest in the link you gave. That is why I said there are alternatives that aren’t body parts.

A sturdy box with a lid and a lock is often called a Trunk, so not only do we need a dictionary but also a Thesaurus ;D
