Question about what to install with Avast!!! helP

wanna format my old lazy laptop today (9y/o) LoL
gonna setup XP-SP3
gonna install Avast Free 6.0.1035!
The Question is
what is the best FREE Firewall and FREE Anti-Malware to install with AvastFree without any conflict?
what about SAS? (i know nothing about it)

P.S. my laptop is slow (512MB Ram)
Your Advice Plz! 8)

In my personal opinion:

Firewall:
Comodo
Online Armour
Outpost Firewall Free

Antimalware for on demand scanning only:
MBAM
SAS

Unless you feel like paying for the one I use (see signature), I suggest to use the one bundled with Windows. :o

  • LUA (limited user account)
  • SRP (software restriction policy)
  • SuRun - an UAC replacement for XP that makes working with XP bearable as normal user.
  • Sandboxie free for your browsing.

Pretty safe if you ask me.

:o where’s the PC Tools Firewall? they advised me to download it year ago!
Thanks for the advice

Won’t exactly rock w/ 512MiB of RAM, plus it’s pretty much dead in the development department since Symantec bought them.

aha!!! didn’t know…thx

Thanks ??? i’m not an expert user so i didn’t understand u :-\ i just know Snadboxie 8)

aha! thx  so what’s ur advice about free light firewall (do u advice me to use Win Firewall)
do u know what is the best free Anti-Malware?

Hi Steve,

You also have “Windows 7 Firewall Control” – link : http://www.sphinx-soft.com/ -
It’s available in different versions (free – plus – portable), very light resources wise, and user friendly interface. Very easy to setup.
Try it.

Pat

Thanks  but i’m using WinXP not Win7

Won’t exactly help on XP? ???

Back to OP here - with 512MiB of RAM, do not overload your system. Use limited user account (do not work as administrator), sandbox for browsing. MBAM+SAS free on-demand only. Maybe Priwatefirewall, give it a try. L’n’S I am using is paid, no free version.

If you want help with the SuRun + SRP part, I can post some details. Shouldn’t be complicated provided that you do things properly immediately after formatting your drive and reinstalling Windows, before you have installed anything else.

-Use limited user account (do not work as administrator) <<< Thx, i didn’t know about it! used to work as an admin!
-MBAM+SAS free on-demand only <<< Together! or one of them?
-SuRun + SRP part <<< i know nothing what r u talking about ???

1/ As said, use on-demand only. It doesn’t matter whether you installed both, nothing running in real time when set up properly.
2/ Already explained in my first post.

gonna read more about SuRun + SRP part and gonna take ur advice
Thanks Alot

Download MalwareBytes http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Super Anti-Spyware http://filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/

Neither one will conflict with avast!

1- I am advised as well to use Malwarebytes. But it is not free when I’m not wrong.

2- There is no need to install SuperAntiSpyware. There is a portable version with a few leftovers only after running it. You can clean out them easily if not needed anymore:

You’re wrong. There’s a free version…!!

  1. Click on the link, I posted.
  2. Click on ‘Download free version’.
And yes, sure there is a paid version, too.
