I’m trying to decide which free anti-virus software to install to replace my expired copy of NAV. I’d like to know how Avast! works with multiple users on WinXP Home.
Will it run as a service and provide full-time protection for all users?
Will it work when you’re logged on with a limited account?
Can limited users modify program settings or install updates, or can that be restricted to administrators? NAV allows the configuration to be protected with a password… what about Avast?
Hi and welcome Bob
as you can probably imagine this forum is bursting at the seams with ex norton users and if you need any help getting rid of it just say the word .
To answer your question ,yes it must be installed by admin and ,yes it has the option of password protection. To determine what level of choice a limited user has on a password protected system you might have to try it and see as i cant recall that ever being asked .
Im sure you will be impressed if you choose to give it a chance
Thanks for the offer, but Norton actually uninstalled just fine and didn’t leave anything behind. :o

Well, I just wanted to ask before going to the trouble of uninstalling Norton. I read that it should be removed before installing another AV program.
OK, that’s great.
OK. Customizability is good.
Thanks to all 3 of you for the replies. I’m going to give Avast a try now.
Maybe it works only for VPS and not for program updates…
Last time I left my computer for 4 or 5 days, we have an update of avast (program one), I’m set to automatically update, and into avast it was scheduled a program (iAVS for program) and nothing
I installed the free version of Avast on my home computer. I have three people that log in under different account names. I am the admin and installed it under my account. When my son or husband log on, Avast comes up stating it is not registered. When I log on, it is registered. I have tried using the registration number from their logons, uninstalling and reinstalling and still cannot get Avast to work when they are logged on. I am running XP SP2. Any suggestions? Thanks.
This has cropped up a number of times in the forum and the only real option/solution that seems to work is to uninstall avast, reboot, Logging on as the Administrator and install it as the Administrator not and account with Admin privileges.
In fact, could be other reasons for the problem…
I use and install avast into a user with Admin privileges (other than the Administrator account).
It works perfectly in any of the common users accounts : :-\ :o
