Questions regarding a JS:Downloader that Avast blocked

Hi all. I use Outlook to download emails from several different web-based email accounts as well as a gmail account. Working very late tonight, all of a sudden a bunch of emails started downloading into Outlook that had already downloaded. (Only from the web-based accounts, not gmail.) An Avast! notice popped up saying that a threat had been detected and blocked: JR:Downloader (MS Outlook). Once that notice popped up, the email downloads stopped. I discovered two emails from someone I don’t know with attachments that Avast marked “Virus” in the subject line with a bunch of numbers. (Yay Avast for stopping this!) I immediately ran a scan with Avast and Malwarebytes to see if something made it through. Nothing showed up.

Weird thing to me is those virus emails were dated 9/22, a week ago. Not knowing how these things work, it seems weird to me that this email is dated 9/22, but just downloaded tonight. And is that what caused the other emails to start downloading?

Thanks for any insight!

are you sure it said JR:Downloader ? and not JS:Downloader

anyway this is often a js script that come as attachment in fake/spam mail and will download ransomware

You may enter your mail account from web (logging in using your browser) and make sure they are deleted

Yes,it’s “JS,” sorry about that!

I already went on the account through the web and deleted the offending email. There was actually only one there, but two in Outlook, apparently a duplicate.

Just so curious as to why it didn’t download until a week after it’s dated. Outlook is set to download from several email accounts every five minutes, plus I may do random manual downloads. (I get a lot of email from clients.)

And do you think that downloader had anything to do with the many emails that re-downloaded when I hadn’t opened it or the attachment?

Thanks!

Pam
