Greetings…
I have been getting random restarts (Windows 2000 Pro SP3), usually when opening a Web page. The crash times match the error below in the admin tools log.
I disabled the auto re-boot so I could see the error, upon BSOD it’s always a “KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED” error, either in Win32.sys or NTOSKRNL.exe More often it’s the Win32 error.
I have version 4 of Avast!, I had an older version but performed the “update” if that matters. Since the update the restarts seem more frequent.
My systems ran Win2KP slawlessly until recently, and I have no problems running Mandrake Linux 9.1
Thanks!
My system: (Win2K Pro SP3 build 2195, AMD XP2500+, MSI-6712 KT4V motherboard; KT400 chipset, latest Via 4 in 1’s, BIOSv1.8. 512MB PC2700 Kingston CAS 2.5 RAM, Radion 9100 128M w/latest drivers, M-Audio Revolution sound card, WD 80G (8M buffer), generic CD-R / DVD ROM)
Here is the Avast error that matches the crash times:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: avast!
Event Category: Client
Event ID: 90
Date: 6/23/2003
Time: 1:55:40 AM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: ONETIME
Description:
AAVM - initialization error: Cannot run provider, JSCRIPT.
I uninstalled avast (using avclear4) after sending the e-mail off to Vik to troubleshoot, but even with Avast un-installed my system crashed.
Are there any files left over I should look for?
An other interesting note, it seems to crash more when I use IE, less often with Mozilla (1.4b)
I used to go weeks without re-booting and months without a problem… actually I can’t remember the last big problam I had. This morning it’s restarted 5 times, something is definately nutty. Other than updating Avast, no new hardware or system changes recently either.
Luckly I can boot into Mandrake 9.1 Linux, which runs stabe as ever… now if I only knew what I was doing in Linux… lol
Greetings from the newbie!
