Randomly Hangs and reboots the phone.

Hello all,

I had Avast mobile security installed about 2 days ago and during this time phone couldnt recover from standby (pressing the power / centre button). After holding on to the on/off button for 10 seconds the phone booted up successfully. Thinking that it could be a phone hung issue i left the phone as it is but this issue happened another 4 - 5 times.

The only thing I noticed that the AV seems to be stuck at 0% and could not finish the scan, even after reboot. Doing a reinstall also didnt help with the scan portion I have since uninstalled it to test is it my phone issue but so far the phone didnt hung or reboot yet.

Not sure if i am the only one but i hope to use it again due to its powerful features. I am currently using a Samsung S2 with 2.3.6 firmware. Not sure what other information i can give to help, let me know an i will try to help

Thanks.

Hi Cavey,

thank you for your report, this sounds quite strange. Could you please be so kind and provide me these informations:

  • device name, firmware, rooted or not / custom ROM and if, which one
  • version of avast mobile security (can be found in Settings/About)
  • is avast app stored on SD card or in your phone

Most appreciated could be some kind of log from device, may be catlog or similar app should help.

Thank you very much.

Hello svehlak,

Thank you for your reply

  • device name
    Samsung Galaxy S2

-firmware
2.3.6

  • Kernel Version
    2.6.35.7-I9100XWKK2-CL726411riit@Dell88 #2

  • rooted or not
    No

custom ROM and if, which one
not custom rom, official 2.3.6.

  • version of avast mobile security (can be found in Settings/About)
    1.0.1282

  • is avast app stored on SD card or in your phone
    on the phone

I have reinstalled avast as what i did before and

  • the anti-theft app which you have to give it another name to replace it initially opens the phone book when you click on it, clicking it again will ask you to key in the pin set for anti-theft which should be the correct behavior
  • most settings are left as default
-i have turned off show notification icon and turned on automatic updates
  • after installation i have rebooted my device

I have turned on catlog. Will post once it happens again

Thank you, I will investigate it and come back with results.

Hello svehlak,

Just a quick update. after a day it seems that avast mobile security is now working fine… i have turned off the phone and turned on again and run catlog again to see if anything pops up… will let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Looks like i spoke too soon… it happened after the reboot…

Let me know if i should set the catlog file over to you directly.

Hi,

could you send it with all the other information you already posted to havlicek@avast.com? I will take a look at it next week.

Filip

Hi Filip,

Have sent the log to svehlak for analysis. Do you still need it on your end? Believe that at the moment TWlauncher from Samsung is causing issues.

Thanks.

He will forward it to me if he sees fit.

Filip

Hi everyone,

sorry to keep you waiting for so long. A few days ago we released virus definitions that should fix the issue with rebooting while scanning the SD card (at least on my phone it did since I was able to reproduce the issue). Could everyone experiencing the issue update to the newest virus definitions and try the SD card scan once again?

Thanks. Hope all is fine now

Filip

Hello Filip,

In the past, my phone would hang many times in a day, and it is true when i checked the definitions, it will show as updated 5 to 6 days ago and you will need to do a manual update.

After the fix, this seems to solve the definition updates (a few hours difference), however the symptom where by the phone cannot wake by pressing the home/centre button still happens occasionally. Unfortunately i dont have any catlogs, will remember to turn it on and email it on when it happens

Hi cavey,

OK, thanks for the feedback. Will watch for your email at havlicek[at]avast.com.

Flip

Thanks Filip,

I have sent you an email with 2 log files. Let me know if you dont receive them.

Got them, will look at them tomorrow. Thanks a lot!

Filip

Looked at the log files but didn’t find anything wrong avast! related (saw a lot of exceptions from other applications though). Actually didn’t find anything indicating that the OS would shutdown/reboot or wouldn’t want to wake up so I’m afraid I won’t be able to help you with that :frowning: The only thing I can suggest is to factory reset the device (you will lose all your data) and if the problem remains, do a warranty claim at where you bought your device.

Also can I ask you what SMS application do you use? Do you have the stock application from Google/Samsung or do you have a 3rd party software you are using?

Filip

Hello Filip,

I already did a factory reset after upgrading to 2.3.6, so at this stage i am not too keen on doing so again.

Let me uninstall avast av portion first, if it reboots then i will move on anti-theft. If both of this are out of the phone and it still crashes… then it must be something else. I will report my findings…

Anyway for the sms application, it is the stock Samsung one. No 3rd party tools for launcher, browser, sms or phone. Mostly stock…

OK, thanks.

Filip

Ok … my findings…

  1. Uninstalled Avast Mobile Security first, the phone rebooted after 51 hours
  2. then uninstalled Avast antitheft, phone rebooted after 23 hours…

Guess it is something else then . Have reinstalled Avast Mobile Security again.

That’s good news for us, but bad news for you. :frowning: Good luck finding the reboot reason.

Filip

Well this is the last updated post from me on this, so hopefully it may help others who may encounter this issue. I surfed around the last few days and found the S2 reboot reason was due to

  1. Wireless option being turned on and a bug causing S2 to crash suddenly
  2. Mirco SD Card or slot causing issues.
  3. RAM Issues.

For my it is highly due to wireless issues as when it crashes and reboots to recover, wireless and data roaming is turned off. So far i have left wifi off for the last 3 days and it seems fine (keeping fingers crossed). This seems to occur for 2.3.5 and 2.3.6, wiping to factory default or sending the phone for RMA will not help according to most other users.

Others claim that the SD card could also cause reboots. So if you try multiple micro SD cards and the problem occur after leaving wifi off, problem could be the SD card slot…

the last option is unlikely, but if this happens you have to RMA the phone.

And for Avast Mobile security it is working very well so far as well, scanning and updates is stable.
