VOTE WISELY!
This is not the first poll about Avast. In this forum, I doubt there is a need for it!!!
Nevertheless, this time I voted fair because I’m deceived of the ranking (but not so bad after all…!) at the detection rates my certain web sites, in particular that AVIRA steels it to Avast…
I would like to see Avast ahead by next year, if not sooner!
But that’s everybody contribution (emailing unknown viruses - not FP - to virus@avast.com. ???
Being relaistic, i’ve rated it as “Very good”. They’ll earn “Excellent” when they add some form of serious proactive protection, self-protection and revamp the sample submission system (already working on it afaik).
This is what it still lacks. Everything else is indeed excellent. Basically all this should be fullfiled with release of avast! 5.x.
I too can’t see the purpose in this on the avast support forums where peoples’ responses are likely to be in the higher bracket of options as they are hardly going to keep a product they only consider less than good, so I don’t know who voted fair and if they are still using avast.
AVAST is still before AVG FREE but behind AVIRA PE CLASSIC for detection rates. That’s why I gave it a fair vote. I use now this configuration on 1 computer:
I actually put on one WinXPSP2 computer AVIRA PE Classic as resident (for detection), BitDefender 8Free (on demand) and clamwin FREE or “turtleWin” as I like to call it (on demand and for the email plugin in Outlook (supposed to scan infected email but- and it’s unclear-after emails are in your pc)). Should they conflict if I use the on demand scanners only after having deactivated the resident in Avira, one at a time? I don’t know how long I’m gone keep that configuration…!!! Web pages have been created recently that put forward Avira and Kasperky as better detection than Avast and they’re generally saying that Avast is on a downhill trend Huh.
I just talked to a colleague and she says that if you catch something that the other AV don’t see and use the quarantine, it’s ok;but, if there are two AV that detect the same virus or malware in the quarantine of the other, there’s gone be conflict and your system could freeze and eventually be damaged. So quite frankly, is it just a matter of leaving the resident or not… Undecided
I want to stress out that in my mind, the first rule in fighting malware and avoiding it is yourself: avoid porno sites, avoid downloading freewares or MP3 on P2P (kazaa, bit torrent, etc…). The antivirus protection comes second. 8)
I rated it very good. I think that along with a good AS application, such as AVGAS, a-squared, or SAS it is completely adequate protection for most of us who are safe surfers.
If one were to examine the last couple of AV Comparatives on demand tests he would see the improvement in AVG from the previous version which did not include the AVGAS component, and the latest which did. The percentages of detection went from 91.69% to 96.37%. Avast rated 92.01% and 93.86%. It is easy to see the improvement in protection with the combination.
I do not intend to argue about the tests, except to say I give them the top grade for tests.
Avast is about 5% below the detection rates of the top AVs such as Kaspersky, F-Secure, or Avira.
For a free AV Avast Home is my overall preferred AV, and has always been the AV I go to as a plan B.
I am not worried about my protection with it at those times, and it has served me well, as it has for some I have put it on their system, and kept it for years.
I believe that if Avast would do as AVG has done, and include a good AS component it would be within a point or so of the top rated ones. Maybe as good.
Avast has always run flawlessly on all computers that I have put it on. But as to ratings, I must rate if below some others as long as they run well on the computer. If it does not run well an AV is not useful.
I applaud Avast for providing such a good AV as free. While I do not mind paying for one, there are those who at times are strapped for funds, and need it. Others who could afford it still use the Home edition and like it so well they just keep it.
The support on this forum is excellent.

Jerry
I rated it excellent. Turned up to High, it’s all I need on my computer.
Avast! for me indeed an excellent AV program…
