RE: XP Home SP3 VERY slow after Avast FREE 9 install?

Hi, im new to the forum but been using AVAST FREE for a while now and being a small local to my community, PC repair business I recommend AVAST to ALL my customers…removing their existing antivirus and replacing with AVAST (with their permission of course) - ALL have been more than happy!!

Recently I have reinstalled XP HOME on a customer PC (Celeron D, 2gb RAM - ACER Aspire) - with SP2… upgraded to SP3 with all drivers etc… running sweet as a nut…until I installed AVAST FREE?! (a version from a few months ago) - it started freezing and slowing down…even refusing to be uninstalled and having to manually shut the PC down with power button pressed in :frowning:

After using AVASTCLEAN app to remove it I CCleaned it then re-installed AVAST FREE 2014 … it works better but STILL slow???

Please can anyone help?

…and doing the same on a second XP PC???

IS AVAST going the same way as Norton? or just GIVING UP on XP users?

No problems here…XP Pro and Win7 Starter.
It’s little slow only if there is no internet when I start the pc but I have this problem with avast from long ago

Here are some options to increase the “logon” speed…I don’t call it boot because it is after you put in PW and wait for desktop to fully load.
Boot to me is POST thru Windows to Logon screen.
I know this is Avast 8 but options are there in new 2014 too: http://www.getavast.net/stop-slow-startup-boot
I’m only guessing that if there “is” internet connection it is the downloading and updating of VPS that makes this slow.
If no internet connection it takes Avast update awhile to try and fail…not sure, just a guess.
Either way, polling & getting a VPS update at “logon” does take time…frankly it does on every A/V product I’ve ever used.

Asking and automatically is the same thing…avast tries to connect in both cases.

Even setting it to download updates manually and disabling the streaming updates doesn’t help increasing the speed…avast is still running the “avast! Emergency Update” schedule task which I can’t disable

It’s like the pc freeze during the attempts to update when there is no internet…anything I run is not started until he is done attempting

FOUND PROBLEM & SOLUTION!

Problem - after AVAST install I noticed that the process - SVCHOST.EXE was pushing the CPU to max ALL the time!

Solution - CHECK what version if IE Explorer you have … both PC’s were at Version 7! you NEED IE8 & the KB2870699 Patch from the Microsoft website!

Once IE8 & Patch were installed… CPU settled down to normal  - Happy Days!

IE7 ?..did you also upgrade from DOS to Windows 3.11 ? ;D
Seriously, great input for others…glad you IDed the fix.

fzuk, the real problem is that you did not perform the (re)install of xp correctly.
You should have installed also all (security) patches/fixes/updates that where released after sp3.

Similar problem to fznuk - XP sp3 - since installing Avast free everything is SO SLOW it is driving me mad. Avast using 74% CPU etc - takes several minutes to load, nothing will appear till “AVAST HAS BEEN UPDATED” voice + box pops up!!! Every item takes minutes, the number of times the PAGE UNRESPONSIVE box comes up with choice to Kill Page or Wait - must be running in the hundreds now!!! Tried to phone Avast - voice says will be connected to next agent … 25 mins later gave up. Tried again today… first I got heavy breathing then some heavy voice hard to understand… apparently have to pay £79.99 for them to correct this free Avast !!! What! Seems only option now is to unload it. Not using IE, using Chrome.

This may help you - see post/reply #17 - it helped me
