Using the latest 2014 version and have been following it up with the previous versions too. HAve been using AVAST since the past 4 years , generally satisfied , I also wish it reaches the pinnacle in certain aspects , beside the general protection it offers. I have supported my observation with some statistics.
Everyone by all means participate , but I do hope someone like LUKAS looks into it from the developers end.
1.I unzipped a PW protected Zip File approx 2478 files of viruses , which used to be available those days.
2. AVAST real time mechanism sprung into action , and send 813 files to quarantine. I am left with 2478-813 = 1665 files still in the folder.
3. I scan the folder with AVAST , it still identifies 6 files for quarantine. After being done, I am left with 1659 files still.
4.I submit a file from amongst that to VIRUS total ,and it is identified by a significant majority including AVAST as potential , which unfortunately the scan should have revealed.
OTHER OBSERVATIONS
While under operation 1 , AVAST chokes the zip file operation to match up with the response mechanism , or to let out the alerts.
IMHO , those two operations to be deemed separate. Also AVAST needs to match its alert refreshing mechanism rather than choke the parent program–ZIP file.
Operation 3 , left out a critical virus.
If I were to compare a similar operation with AVIRA , from which I switched on to AVAST, no file would never find a place in the unzipping folder, and effectively quarantined , and unzipping was never choked.
This is the perfection I am looking for.
A sincere Well Wisher.

As fo the “dangerous” virus you’re mentioning, Cascada is an old DOS virus that doesn’t work on modern systems at all (especially if they are 64bit). With avast! 2014, loads of old viruses that don’t exist anymore and cannot be run on modern systems have been removed from signatures. The rest of old viruses that are so uncommon and ancient but could theoretically still be a threat to users have been moved to cloud. This allowed them to trim the signatures size, speed up scanning process without sacrificing protection.
Some antiviruses still carry all the signatures for these, avast! and many others don’t anymore. Because it’s just pointless.
But what is the point of showing off at Virus Total and not in the individual machines. Not coming for an argument, but as times change priorities change , and if an Antivirus flags off something , any user will desire , his AV is also stead fast.
I have submitted the file VIRIII.zip password - virus at the listed id.http://www.avast.com/contact-form.php?page=success
Unfortunately I am unable to link the transmission here. Hope the developers look into it…
