Real time Shields (mail and Web) wont turn on

Not sure how to fix this but my Real time Shields (mail and Web) wont turn on. Also the Fix Now button does not respond when pressed. My computer is also experiencing different issues. it wont shut down or restart. when prompted to shutdown or restart the screen just turns blue and the computer stays running, so i have to turn it off by turning off the power strip because it freezes. I tried to scan the computer and it scans to a certain point and freezes pretty much at the same spot every time. Help with any of these issues would be greatly appreciated.

Could you please report your OS (including service pack), RAM/CPU, what other security software is running, what AV was installed prior to Avast and how was it removed.

Is it the same file the “freeze” happens at every time, or the same folder, or the same approx % of scanning? If the same file or folder, please post the name of that one.

I am running Windows xp sp3 on my dell dimension 8250. the only thing ive had on the computer was Avast so no other AV was on the computer. the file freeze happens at the same percentage each time and approximately the same files and folders were tested each time +/- a few. full system scan stops at 37% each time but the folder varies this time it was c:\Documents and settings\user\startmenu\programs\accessories\tourwindowsxp.lnk. and the quick scan always stops at 73% and this time stopped at c:windowssoftwaredistribution\wuredir\9482F4B4-E343-43B6-B170-9A65B6822C77\wuredir.cab. this all started Saturday. I had no problems up until that point. Avast blocked several hundred malware and trojans according to the update Saturday. I shut my computer down because it was just ongoing. that was the last time it worked. shutting down and the mail and web shields were automatically shut off when i turned it back on later in the day

Anybody???

All I can suggest is to try the latest release, forum info and download links.

I have avast5 and use windowsxp…same thing happening…the shields were not up…Im a crazy fix it type of woman lol…so i went into maintenance and decided to press the update program and other update button…it did update something that wasnt before I guess…and then said to ok the computer logging off then restarting …when it did restart…everything was ok…voila…the fix it button didnt work either…on any of the things i pressed…so I never give up and kept fooling with it until I went to maintenance page…not so hard…try all sorts of things before going crazy…lol

@ ludes70

Since it is a Dell computer, it came with some brand of av on it when new.

What was it and how was it removed?
