Red Cross Antivirus

This question has probably been answered, but i can’t seem to find an answer anywhere on the site.
Is there a free program that will remove this from my computer. Will Avast! do it
Thanks
Gene

Hi, try MBAM (the free version should do it - blue download button.)
Install it, update it, run a quick scan, following that a report will be produced.
Select everything found, and “remove selected”. (It will quarantine them). If prompted to reboot, do so promptly.

Some more info about this rogue here and here.

Thank you, thank you thank you. It worked

Very good. Lets hope it doesn’t come back.
What’s your security set up and OS?

Can you make suggestions on the security setting and how to do it
Thanks
Gene

Sure, there are a few basic sound procedures/applications that are good to adopt or use.

-Keep all software installed, especially the OS, and Java/Flash up to date. Secunia PSI is good for monitoring this.
-Use a firewall, and antivirus, and have at least one demand scanner (such as MBAM) available.
-Use a browser such as Firefox, with the NoScript add-on. If using IE, disable the running of scripts/activex not marked as safe. (The sort of rogue you had typically installs via a “drive-by download”, direct from a hacked website. No user action is required - ie: clicking on something - to get it to download. Disabling scripting stops this sort of thing in its tracks. It can affect legitimate functioning of some websites, so takes a bit of getting the hang of.
-Don’t post your email address on forums, unless it’s a “throwaway address”. (hint hint nudge nudge, look at your profile and change it to hide the address.) It’s inviting spammers.
-Immunize your system somewhat, from known bad sites, by using an application like SpywareBlaster, by Javacool, and/or maybe a hosts file. MVPS puts out and maintains one of these, with full instructions and info. Google “mvps hosts”.

Thats’ just a few tricks that can make a huge difference, and isn’t beyond the tech ability of most users. All I’ve mentioned is free or donation-ware, too. Hope it helps.
