A nasty piece of malware, it opens Chrome and tries to direct it to a webpage which Avast stops. But does it over and over…ad infinitum. I’ll come home to 20 or 30 open tabs.
However, I did a deep scan yesterday and Avast did not find it. Why is that?

your description indicate a browser hijacker / PUP = Possible Unwanted Program
avast PUP detection is default off
Interesting. I found several references to it some with lengthy explanations for removal and recommending that “Spyhunter” was necessary to clean it.
At any rate - I wiped my drive and loaded a fresh Win 8. I did attempt to use some freeware - eScan - but that created a larger, worse issue so I wiped the drive.
I could have removed it manually without the need to reformat. None of the removal guides online are worth the page they are printed on as they are generic removal methods or they get you to buy their all singing cleaner which does not work
