Red X's

After I open a website, I find that in some instances on that page I get a red x where a graphic or advertisement is suppose to be.

Not that I want the ads, but the graphics are not advertisements, and I would like to see them.

In installing this program, I kind of remember reading about red x’s but I can’t remember what link in Avast.

Your Avast AntiVirus protection is highly remcommended. Although I am an advanced user, I am not understanding all your support groups are suggesting.

I never heard about Avast blocking images. I think you should look at your browser settings.

  • Close the browser
  • Empty the browsers cache
  • Make sure “show all images” is enabled
  • Check settings in other security software you have installed
  • Reboot
  • Try again to open a webpage and tell us if the problem is solved

If you are using IE then this is a very common problem that is cache related on small images. A search on google for this should return lots of hits

As Eddy said clear your cache.

Gert2 WELCOME to forums !

For sure, avast! is not blocking those pictures or adds… avast! is antivirus, not add blcoker. Red X-es and missing graphics is well known issue in IE related browsers.

Another possibility - what firewall are you using ? If it’s Outpost, it could be that you still have add-blocker active. Check that as possibility, but I’m sure that red X-es are primary IE issue…

Cheers !

Outpost usually brands the location with [AD IMG] (or AD Size, etc.) if it blocked them.

Cleaned cache. Still there.

I have Kerio Firewall and Spy Sweeper. Also

Try another browser and see if that one has the same problems or not. At least it will tell us if it is a browser problem or not.

You mean Netscape or Opera ???

Yes or one of the many others you can find HERE

How well does any of the suggestions you made integrate with Microsoft?

And will I need to reestablish my home page, favorites, etc? :-\

No need for setting a homepage, bookmarks or anything, it is just to see if the problem is your brwoser or something else.

am doing homework. will get back to you after lunch. Gert

Downloaded Mozilla Foxfire.

Brougt up Microsoft IE and compared with Mozilla. Both have red x’s in exactly the same places.

It looks like your setting in one of the applications is preventing them from loading.

You can ofcourse shut them down 1 at a time and check when the problem is solved. This way you will know what application it is that are blocking them.

What version of Kerio do U use 2x or 4x?

If it 4x, try disabling its ad blocking option & then clear Ur browser cache & try the page again

PS Firefox & Opera are much better than IE imho, U should have a look at some of the extensions for Firefox, only time i use IE is for windowsupdate 8)

BaNzI ;D

Undid the ad blocking in Kerio and emptied via Control Panel/Internet Options cookies and temp files.

Your signature, BanziBaby is red x’d as Eddy’s isn’t.

See you all in about an hour.

Thanks for your continuing help.

I think most of the time you see a red X it’s because the image isn’t on the server so it can’t be downloaded, or the path to the image isn’t correct, especially if you see a red x in different browsers.

Haven’t forgotton the help you have given. I found out thru another forum that if I change the name of C:\windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts to C:,,\hosts.old that the red x’s would go away.

Guess what?! It WORKS. At least for me. It has something to do with www.wunderground.com - Weather Underground.

Thank you all very much for your input.

Hello Gert2,

Can you open hosts file (now it’s hosts.old because you renamed it) in your text editor. Please copy contents of that file and post them here in this thread…

Thanks in advance !

The hosts file can be used to block certain domains. Can become handy if you eg have a public system and don’t want people to visit se sites.

If your hosts file blocked certain sites, who changed the hosts file in the first place?
