Reinstalling Avast free ?

Hello all, I have a strange effect on my Avast tray icon and have been told to reinstall the program which should cure it.

My question is do I just remove Avast and then install it again, if so what about my my login password, and would I need to register my account again using the same data or different.

Thanks for any help

Are you using Free or Pro! If you are using Free. Uninstall it via add/remove, restart it, and use this tool http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and follow the instructions. About need to re-register after re installing Avast the answer is yes you need to re register avast using the same data that you used before. I don’t know about Pro if you need to re register because i don’t that know and I am using Free version.

Hello Staticguy, and thanks for your reply, I’m afraid the situation has become more complicated now as I did a Windows XP restore back to three days ago, and Avast now tells me my Pro trial period has ended, but I wasn’t on a trial period or Pro, but rather the Avast Free version.

To try sorting this I did a restore reversal but it still tells me I’m at the end of a trial Pro version, and I don’t know how to get back.

Any info appreciated.

We are seeing more of this when system restore is used without disabling the avast self-defence module before using system restore.

You need to do a clean reinstall:

  • Download the latest version of avast, 8.0.1483 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for all versions).

    1. Now uninstall avast! - using add remove programs, if you can’t do that (as appears to be the case) start from the next step, reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, it will request it be run from safe mode (and will handle the boot into safe mode), first for 7.x if previously installed and then for 8.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Hello DavidR, many thanks for your excellent help instructions which I followed to the letter, and I am now a fully restored Avast Free member with every thing working fine, and if ever I need to do a system restore in the future I will know exactly how to avoid the problem happening again.

Best regards Bizet.

You’re welcome.
