Hi All, … New to the forum. Yesterday I reinstalled Avast version 4.7. Since that time I have been unable to use my Thunderbird e-mail. When I turn off Avast I can send and receive e-mails. How do I remove the e-mail scanning? Thank you.

If you aren’t using SSL/TLS (encrypted) email as Bob suggests, especially if you were previously able to send and receive with avast installed, then check below.
Sounds like firewall blocking if when you disable avast email scanning it works.
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashMaiSv.exe internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and check for email, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

All is well. Apparently I started using my e-mail too soon. Later attempts allowed me to transmit and receive mail. Thank you both for your interest and support.
