See How important is it to completely remove Norton? topic.

  1. Please, browse the Symantec website and download the specific uninstall tool for NAV. It will clean trash left behing by NAV (files, registry keys). You need this to proper working with avast.

  2. Can you try to repair your installation? Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

  3. You can delete folders/files under either ‘Norton’ or ‘Symantec’ folder, the others under Liveupdate folders and ApplicationData…

  4. On Registry, well good Registry Cleaners could do some work.
But, for me, the only thing I would worry about is the VDD keys. You must have the following entry there:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswMonVd.dll

Can you post the contents of these Windows Registry keys in your system?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet004\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers\VDD

Check the Symantec website for complete removal instructions for the version (i.e., year) of Norton antivirus that is installed in your pc. Be careful to read all relevant info that applies to you. A lot depends on whether your Norton antivirus is a standalone product or part of some suite of Symantec products such as Norton SystemWorks, etc. In most cases a manual removal will be needed. This means, among other things, that you will have to delete manually a lot of registry entries.

Handling the registry is potentially dangerous. You must first make a copy of your current registry so that you can restore it in case something goes terribly wrong. One utility that can simplify all the registry operations you will need is RegCompress. It is part of the suite of such utilities KMCS-DSS which can be found at http://www.kmcsonline.com/index.html

Running RegCompress before removing manually registry entries will result in removing practically each one of them for you thus simplifying your job. RegCompress can also make and save a copy of your registry initially as well as restore it in case this is needed.

Good luck!

Hi,
I’m a fairly recent convert to Avast, too.

For the record, here’s how I got rid of NIS2002…

Ran RegMechanic and cleared up any existing problems and made sure the registry was tidy.
Used Control Panel to uninstall NIS2002
Reboot
UsedControl Panel to uninstall LiveReg
UsedControl Panel to uninstall LiveUpdate
Reboot
Used the Symantec utility RNav.exe to mop-up NAV
Used the Symantec utility RnisUPG.exe to mop-up NIS
Used the Avast external control to mop-up any left-overs!
Rebooted and installed Avast!
Rebooted and ran RegMechanic to clear up any remaing Symantec entries (and, yes, there were several still lurking!)
… anyway, all seems OK and I’m a happy Avast user.

I hate when a user come here, ask and does not come back… :stuck_out_tongue:

I also hate Norton. Norton sucks. You hear that Norton? Shame on you leaving garbage on our machines that don’t get uninstalled and causing conflicts. You suck.

Please don’t install Norton on your machines. Norton leaves garbage littered all over the place and makes it difficult to install other AV programs. I don’t care how much they pay to get good reviews. Norton sucks.

Technical,

Don’t sweat him not showing back up.

Cause this thread can help others, I am in the same situation.

Uninstalled Norton,Liveupdates still in ADD/remove.
When I tried to remove it told me there was alot of crap left.

This thread will help me,with my limited skills, along with the help of a friend with real skills ;).

Yeah, you’re really being too kind to Norton

But, look on the bright side, at least there are great alternatiaves like Avast! and you are now using it.

Ok, I’ll bit my big tongle ;D

LMAO, uuhhhh, yeah,

That is this thread ;D

I need to sleep… six hours are not being sufficient… :-[

Geeze Technical,

Hope you didn’t think that was a shot, it was just funny!

As an AVAST newbie,
No way would I want to offend somebody with 10126’s posts here.

Have experimented with settings since last post,
and AVAST is working even better!
