Renewal/Update from V4.8 to V8.0 problems

Paid for V8.0 update from V4.8 whose registration expired.
Downloaded and installed V8.0 on W2k Pro Sp4. Shows a desktop icon and is listed in C:\Programs\Avast, but no icon in system tray. Program will not open!!!
Downloaded aswclear uninstall file. Opened in safe mode and mouse clicked once aswclear and V8.0 icon appeared in system tray. Proceeded to run scan in safe mode and found zero (0) problems.
Did not invoke aswclear uninstall at this time. Restarted in regular mode and system tray icon was gone. V8.0 would not open from desktop icon nor from C:\Program.
Restarted again in safe mode and ran aswclear and deleted V8.0 and also deleted any old Avast files in recycle bin and elsewhere in system.
Restarted in regular mode and reinstalled V4.8 by my CD. Avast refuses to update because it can’t confirm my new license key.

Try this:

  1. remove avast through control panel
  2. reboot
  3. run aswclear
  4. reboot
  5. run CCleaner (delete all temporary files and check/fix the registry errors, if any is found. Repeat the last one till nothing is found anymore)
  6. reboot
  7. install avast 8 (or perhaps even better 2014-RC2)
  8. reboot

Let us know if this solved it.

Edit:
the 8) is a glitch in the webboard software. It should be 8.) (without the dot)

Maybe you should wait for the final which will go out mid of this month.

N/G.
Running W2pk Pro Sp4.
Ccleaner requires XP or better.
Will try alternate options similar.

Thanks to those that responded to my post today.
After many hours of restarts it seems that Avast! has a conflict if W2k Pro is, or is not, a required operating system. From http://www.avast.com/en-us/pro-antivirus:

“What are the supported operating systems for avast! 8.x ?
The supported operating systems for avast! Premier 8.x, avast! Internet Security 8.x, avast! Pro Antivirus 8.x and avast! Free Antivirus 8.x are Microsoft Windows 8 (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or higher (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 2 or higher (any Edition excl. Starter Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit) or Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit)”

And from http://www.avast.com/en-us/pro-antivirus#tab2:

“System requirements:
Operating Systems Supported:
Windows 8 (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit, excl. RT Edition)
Windows 7 (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit)
Windows Vista (any Edition excl. Starter Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit)
Windows XP Service Pack 2 or higher (any Edition, 32-bit or 64-bit)
Windows 2000
Older Windows operating systems (Windows 95/98/ME/NT) are not supported.”

Owning to the many hours devoted trying to get Avast! A V Pro to run, it’s time to close the book and say goodbye and seek another product.

I would say it is time to upgrade the OS.
