Yep that is OK reboot and run the second fix
I did all and windows update is still the same, not working…
When I run the first fix on the black box it said Invalid Switch: tmp*.cat even thou it said all commands were succesfull…
The only alteranative left now is a repair install I’m afraid - do you have a windows CD ?
I´ll see if my dad has it, he won´t know, I´ll have to ask my brother…
Thanks a lot for your help, thou, I really appreciate it, really…
I´ll post as soon as I find out…
There is a tutorial on how to run a repair instal here http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/138-how-to-repair-windows-xp/
Thanks Essexboy! I´ll try when I get the CD.
meanwhile if someone can help me with this new issue, today I can not get to my email or yahoo or any of those websites. I did yesterday.
I can go to http://www.comcast.net/ but when I click to log into mail:
https://login.comcast.net/login?s=wnamp&ts=446c4d31
Internet Explorer can´t display that page
the error :

Yesterday it was working fine, I wonder what happened… and if I can correct something so I can go to https pages
Thanks!
PS: I check the protocolos SSL y TLS and they are enabled.
PS: I downloadad firefox and is working well there, I guess I´ll wait till I get thew CD and try to fix the mess this computer is in…
Thanks again to all of you for your help, specially to Essexboy
Hi!
I haven´t been able to get a windows XP disc yet, to do the windows xp repair, will you advice to use this by now?
http://free-window-registry-repair.softonic.com/
Also, the last windows update was about 18 moths ago:
1- how safe will it be to use the computer without the windows update but having avast, malwarebytes and spyblaster on and using firefox instead of IE?
2 - is it safe to buy the Avast and Malawrebytes profesional edition online in the state this computer is right now?
I´m asking this in case i don´t get the CD before I leave…I´m leaving Spain soon…
Many thanks for your time and advice…
To be honest I would not use a registry cleaner - they can do more harm than good, especially as so many files have invalid signatures
As long as you keep your protection you will be relatively safe. It should be safe to do online purchases as the problem is system not malware
There is one fairly serious patch that needs to be done, however MS has a workaround for that until you are able to download updates again
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2286198 once you have done this you will need to reverse the fix prior to downloading updates. The fixit programmes should work
Hello!
I finally got a Windows XP profesional original copy with SP2. This computer was bought with windows already installed. I do have the sticker on the computer with the original product key.
I read the following and my question is: will I have a problem if the original version was installed with a OEM copy or by having the producy key it will work?
The major PC manufacturers (Dell, HP, Acer, etc.) use OEM copies of Windows that are usually recovered by means of using a Recovery CD/DVD, which is not a valid Windows installation CD/DVD. They are the only copies that can be reinstalled to those computers unless you buy a new OEM or retail copy of Windows XP/Vista which has a new licence and hence a new Product Key ( is this right?)
Thanks again!
There are still various things you can try.
checkdsk
Right click C drive and choose properties.
Go to tools tab and check both,
“Automatically fix file system errors”
“Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors”
Restart computer and let it complete fixing errors.
Or you could try to reinstall the windows update client.
But try this first, then try the other.
I’ll check back later and post the other info later if needed.
My last resort here would be system recovery from the recovery partician if possible…
Do you have a recovery drive listed in My computer?
Does the system have a recovery disc creator that can make em for that system?
Best of luck.
An other good question would be:
How much free available space is on the C drive where windows is installed?
If under 5 gigs, I would uninstall anything you know you installed in it that you no longer intend to use.
I would also recommend turning off system restore if you have not yet done so yet, because who wants to go back to how infected it was?
I wouldn’t.
Then turn system restore back on and manually create a restore point that is worth going back to.
This alone I bet gives you 5 to 8 gigs of free space back.
When writing windows it puts all the files from the disc on the hard drive in a folder first, so that when running chkdsk it uses to recover corrupt/unreadable or missing files.
Also if you post the make/model of computer and what operating system, I’m sure I can find the system recovery manual too from the manufacturers site unless its a frankenstein.
Definitely Create recovery discs if it is an option asap too…
Recovery DVD creator could save you from spending money on something you really didn’t need.
You can usually find it in a Dell, or HP folder in
Start->All programs list usually depending on manufacturer.
I didn’t totally understand your questions fully, so I didn’t really answer em, but I will say:
If you did install the XP disc you bought with a new key on it.
Yes you would have to use the new key that came with the disk.
The one on the sticker would do you no good and be useless at this point if this was the case.
Also,You will be missing many drivers after writing windows I wouldn’t doubt.
Like sound, graphics, Ethernet, and so on.
So you wont even be able to connect in some cases to download the drivers from the manufacturer unless you get em ahead of time,
or you have an other computer to download em with that can connect.
OH! I just wrotte a long post and it disappeard…
Thanks Glitch for your help!
I tried your first option and it said something like NTFS there are no errors found. restarted and windows update still does not work.
Have you read all this thread? because we tried many things and right now thanks to Essexboy my computer is clean but still can not update. When I download something (without windows update) like SP3 the problem is when installing this comes up: Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer.
The Cryptographic service seems to be working fine.
Will I have any problems doing the windows xp repair with the OEM versus regular installing issue? I read many tutorials about it and it doesn´t seem to have the product key come up during the process but then again some sites mentioned it, so it´s really oh! so very confusing… :-
Im leaving Spain next wednesday till next year and it will be really nice to have this computer up and running and secure since my dad is old and knows nothing about computers and my nephews use it when they visit and I´m sure they created the problem >:(
How do I reinstall the windows update client and the other options you mentioned?
The computer specs are posted under every post…available space 138 gb out of 149 gb.
RE:

Yes you would have to use the new key that came with the disk
The computer has the version XP it came up with pre installed .I have the Product key sticker that came with the computer… My brother in law lend me his windows xp cd which is the same version as this one which is the cd I intended to do the repair with but have not use it yet.
My dad does not have or remembers if it came with a cd.
also what will happen if I start the windows XP repair and half throu it I have a problem with the original product key that came with the computer? will I be able to go back to where I am now or will I stay stuck forever… :-\
By the way the windows update on the logs file error is 0x8007f0da…
this is a copy of what comes up can´t post the log or don´t know how, it´s too large…

I have only read this^^^^^ works before…I cant confirm first hand… so try this first.
Re Install the windows update client.
I wrote these instructions after figuring out instructions from other sites didnt work for me.
I was helping a friend with Vista, so you may not have to run as administrator like the instructions say exactly.
First, make sure time and date are set to the correct date and time.
This can cause windows update errors as well.
Could be as simple as this.^^^^^^^then check windows update again.
If no joy, continue on, and try these other steps.
Cut and paste the following file to the desktop after completing steps 2 and 3 below.
C:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml
Since Windows security will not allow you to do this, you must take ownership of the file first.
step 1)
Run a command prompt
with “Run as Administrator”.
step 2)
Type in the following commands
takeown /f C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml
step 3)
cacls C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml /G :F
Go to C:\Windows\winsxs\ and rename the pending.xml file to
pending.bak
^^^^Only if you cant delete or move it to desktop after steps 2 and 3.
Then uninstall and reinstall the windows update agent for your 32 or 64 bit OS.
Use “Windows Installer Cleanup Utility” to remove the windows update agent and reboot.
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/MSICLEAN.htm
Click on “Restart” in the dialog box that appears to restart the computer
Reinstall the Windows Update Agent, and check for windows updates.
Windows, x86-based systems(32 bit)
http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.4.7600.226/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
Windows, x64-based systems(64 bit)
http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.4.7600.226/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe
Done deal.
Gl
I almost forgot.
You will have to show hidden files in windows to find this file.
C:\Windows\winsxspending.xml
Here is how to do that.

There is a tutorial on how to run a repair instal here http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/138-how-to-repair-windows-xp/
I got a Cd Windows XP same version as one installed from my brother in law. In the tutorial it says:You can use any XP CD as long as it’s the same version (Home/Pro). You will also need a valid CD key.
I have the original product key on a sticker on the computer, will that work? or if I use somebody´s else CD will be problematic?
Thanks!
Yep the sticker on the side will work as it is a legitimate key
