[Resolved] Is Avast currently killing Win10?

Hi,

I’m now using Avast+Win since years, I neved faced such a problem. I have a new PC (mobile chipset, I7) since a few time, and I tried to install Win10 (home edition) plus Avast (free/initial edition).

I tried that twice. Everything succeeds, untill Avast ends its install. After first Avast install, I noticed a computer lock, then I needed to reboot. From that point, the computer went stucked in repairs loops. I had to reinstall Win. At the second attempt, it was similar. At reboot, Win10 looped in unsuccessful disk repairs attempts. I didn’t keep precise logs.

At first attempt, I had a recovery point. But that didn’t help. At second attempt, I again couldn’t use a recovery point, neither could I repair the disk content using my install media (downloaded current USB media).

Now I have again a fresh Win10 install on that computer. But I’m sure Avast install could kill it again…

Has anyone noticed this issue those days, with current Microsoft/Win 10 (home) and current Avast releases?

I only noticed those exchanges, which look similar than my own issues: “It only boots into Automatic Repair…” “Unfortunately the system restore box says there aren’t any restore points found.” http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f338/win-10-auto-repair-loop-avast-1168393.html

Any hints or ideas to overcome this issue would be welcome. I asked Microsoft support, they responded: “We suggest that you get in touch with the application developer for further help.”

Best regards

  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?
    Do u try repair?
    Repair Avast:
  1. Control Panel → Add/Remove programs → Avast
  2. Click on ‘Repair’.
  3. Follow instructions.
  4. Reboot.

Hi,

  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
Win 10 home (or familly) x64
Now in sys infos, I see version / build 1607 / 14393.447 (I don’t know if that was different 24 and 48 hours ago)
  • Other security related software installed…?
No. I installed Avast on basic Windows 10 install, on initially formated disk
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?
Nothing else than Avast, top of that fresh Win 10 install .Win comes bunddled with Defender. I didn’t disable Defender before installing Avast. I just installed Win, some common apps (like Gimp, Firefox, …), and Avast - bang.

Do u try repair?
When killed, at reboot, Win suggests to repair the disk. But this fails. When killed, boot disk or boot data seems corrupted, I have no other choice than to reinstall Win 10 from scratch.

I found and now just installed the beta (which still needs some extra actions, it shows a red sign, “You are unprotected”; but that is another and unrelated issue). In that state, my PC and Win are still operationnal, even after reboot.

Beta was from here, where I picked beta9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe:
https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=192643.0

One more detail: I now installed the Avast beta only. When I installed Avast (the current non beta version), I didn’t care, and install tool probably also installed Chrome.

Do you want me to remove the Avast beta, and install the current stable Avast again, without Chrome? That shall take me again hours to reinstall/update again Win to 1607 / 14393.447 over Internet…

I’m doing it… I uninstalled the beta, then rebooted, as suggested by the uninstall tool.

Now, Defender is inactive. Because I had the Avast beta installed? I have no apps installed unless some drivers, libraries for those, and Firefox. Win is still build 1607 / 14393.447.

And I’m now running avast_free_antivirus_setup_online I downloaded on novembrer 11th. According to Win, the editor is verified AVAST software a.s. I’m unchecking Chrome option. And go, for some time…

Do you want me to remove the Avast beta, and install the current stable Avast again, without Chrome?
Yes.From this link:http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe

That is too late. I’m running again what I donwloaded on november 11th. It is on a separate disk. I can provide it to you later, according to what happens next. Or I might test yours later…

Now up and stable? I could reboot, with Avast installed.

The Avast Install tool I am using was from here: https://www.avast.com//fr-fr/index

My Win is still build 1607 / 14393.447. I canot tell you if that changed, the last 48 hours. Win 10 comes with Defender, I didn’t care.

I now reinstalled Avast. Then later only, some apps. Whilst installing Avast, Defender was now inactive.

And I just noticed that one of the common apps I’m installing comes bundeld with Ad-Ware (an AV tool?):
http://www.lavasoft.com/mylavasoft/support/supportcenter/technicalproblems/faqs/how-to-uninstall-0

During my two previous attemps, I didn’t care about Defender state. Niether did I care about bundeled apps. Didn’t notice any choice for Ad-Ware option.

If I would have to reinstall soon again Win after such a crash, I would now:

  • install Win,
  • disable Defender,
  • install Avast
  • then only add my apps, double checking what their install tools provide…

Hi,

I could now use that computer for some hours, and reboot, without an issue, with Avast active. Disk content is again damaged. I did nothing since installs where finished: I turned the computer off, then later on again.

Now Windows loops at boot, in diagnostics/automatic repair attempt. I created a restore point but again, Win install media doesn’t find any on that disk.

My two previous crashes were a little bit different, computer hangs, they occurred during Avast install, this is why I do suspect it.

Many Antivirus programs had issues with built 1607 of Windows 10. Be sure to download the latest release and install and not the old one you have downloaded. https://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download or use the direct link from BeSecure above

I was using the 10 days ago official Avast installation piece of software, the tool which downloads the latest Avast binairies. I think this is correct, for the latest release.

On disk crashes, the computer doesn’t boot anymore, it loops on initial boot step, Win trying to fix something there… I checked now further, using a command prompt from install media when the disk was dead. I cannot run dir command on the Win partition: “disk structure is damaged or unreadable”. Chkdsk /f of Win partition interrupts immediately: “volume version and state is unknow”.

My Win reinstall (plus updates downloads) is now ongoing again. During the next days, I won’t reinstall Avast, to check how my config behaves.

Ad-Ware seems to be force provided by Firefox installation tool.

The topic should read:
Is Microsoft trying to kill Antivirus programs.
At the moment, the latest builds after build 14936 no longer work with anything except Defender.
To date, this still has not changed.

14936? But i have Win Home x64 build 1607 / 14393.447.

The topic title I wrote could be changed, if this is an issue. I’m aware of “Is Microsoft trying to kill Antivirus programs” question. But I do feel my current problem is different, disk content ending damaged, as I described above: “disk structure is damaged or unreadable”, “volume version and state is unknow”.

Eugene Kaspersky even sued them for their recent behavior, however I doubt they are really going to Kill 3rd party AV clients. Apple has never liked AV on the Mac, and doesn’t allow it in the App Store, but doesn’t interfere with others releasing it through their own channels. If Apple doesn’t block it, surely Microsoft wouldn’t.

My issue is now solved. I’ve Windows+Avast up since hours now. My laptop looks stable, after approx 15 time Win reinstall, needed to figure out what was going on. With my config (basic SSD+HDD), software which was provided/suggested by the PC manufacturer kills either the c: file system or the Win registry content; top of that, Avast finished to kill the setup…

@MicrosoftHelps Good to know it’s up and running now. If your laptop doesn’t support iRST, there are 3rd party software products similar to it.
