[Resolved] Web Shield Problem

Avast! Free Antivirus 5.0.677

Problem:
If Web Shield On, with Mozilla Firefox, IE and Chrome do not have Internet access.

Internet works:

  • If turn off Web Shield;
  • If clear 80 and leave empty field in Settings> Troubleshooting> Redirect Settings> Web> HTTP Port(s).

Context:

  • Windows Vista;
  • This happened after the last update of the engine and virus definitions (101103-2);
  • Already uninstalled Avast 5 and cleaned registry with aswclear5.exe and new clean install, the problem continues;
  • With Windows Defender and Windows Firewall turned off, the problem continues;
  • I don’t have other protection software installed (firewall, etc).

Same problem. (Windows Vista, btw.)

Upgraded to Avast 5 and …blooey! No Internet Explorer, Firefox or Google Chrome. (Indicatively, I can receive and send emails–and, for all its limitations, still get on the web through Download Accelerator.)

Avast Support insists that Avast is not causing the problem–that it is my firewall settings which are causing it.

But I had not changed any firewall settings.

On a whim (and trusting Avast) I uninstalled my (Comodo) firewall altogether–and forked-out for Avast’s own Internet Security Suite: Antivirus and Firewall together. Surely they would not interfere with each other.

Not only was I wrong about that, but Avast now has a wad of my money.

Perhaps Avast can tell me, that if a firewall setting is the problem, then why–and right from a fresh installation–is Avast’s own Firewall interfering with its own Web Shield (which is the culprit here)???

Beyond that, I find firewall settings a complete mystery, so I tend to stick with the defaults. Accordingly, when Avast tells me to “allow” such and such in my firewall, perhaps they would be good enough to tell me just HOW to do that and not rely entirely on the Help files to explain it. Did I say "explain? I’ve just had my system out to TWO different computer specialists and, even though these were armed with Avast’s own explanatory emails, they have not been able to solve the problem. Having thrown their own hands up in disgust, the only thing they could do was to disable Avast’s Web Shield–leaving my system very vulnerable. I wonder, what did I pay for?

Avast: you keep telling me your product is not the problem. I, and TWO separate computer repair shops are telling you you ARE the problem–if only because even professionals cannot figure out how to configure Avast 5 “properly,” as you say it should be.

I’m telling you, Avast, you’d better get your stuff together and quick, or you’re going to loose one long-term customer–and I won’t go down quietly.

Oh, to hell with it.

I’m going over to AVG–and I’m going to demand Avast give me my money back.

NEW TEST:

  1. With Avast! Free Antivirus 4.5 > no problem, full funcional;

  2. Install Avast! Free Antivirus 5 without update of engine and virus definition > no problem, full funcional;

  3. Update engine and virus definition of Avast! 5 > no internet access, is necessery turn off WEB SHIELD


CONCLUSION:

Is a AVAST problem.

same problem here for 4 days now and no response from Avast forum. Quite a disappointing. There are many people with that problem and no one could tell whats wrong :X I’ve test all “curing” methods in the forum with no success. Have a nice evening.
P.S. Install another AV till the problem is resolved.

Have you properly removed other antivirus programs? Have you scanned for any malware? What firewall are you using?

If you remove http port 80 from redirect settings it disables your webshield. So that is not recommended.

Read this http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=65054.0 and report back if it does or does not work. Make sure you select the fix for the relative operating system. I don’t know if this will work for each individual case as each of you may have different problems.

@ds123 - you will receive much better help if you only post one time for a particular problem. So far I count 4 posts for essentially the same related problem. Other forum members may just start overlooking all of these posts. Just a suggestion.

SOLUTION:

  1. Automatic task:

XP TCP/IP Repair 2.0 (XP/VISTA)

1.1. Reset TCP/IP > Reboot
1.2. Repair Winsock > Reboot

PROPOSAL:

Include TCP/IP reset and Winsock repair or similar option in Troubleshooting of Avast!5

CONCLUSION:

I’ve tested, problem solved.

The solution is simple, Avast can implement and integrate this solution preventing users dissatisfied.

Thanks for the solution, I do not understand why this version is having me fix Winsock, or why 5 gives me the exclamation point when I have to turn off Webshield for this problem with AVAST’s new version. I hope I do not mess anything up…I am using a TP Router with Comodo Firewall if that matters. Thank you for the fix?

It give you the exclamation point as it is monitoring all the shields, when one is disabled then it will show that as a reminder that not all shields you have installed are running.
