My external hard disk got infected with the $recycler virus. After an avast scan several .exe folders were infected. I placed them in the virus chest but then I found out that I lost all my folders on my HD!!!
Is there any way to undo the previous scan or restore the infected folders??? (restoring the seperate folders didn’t help as they just put back empty folders on my HD)
Can anyone please help me? At the moment I’m more concern about losing all my documents than fixing the virus!!
Thanks for the reply. I have tried to restore the files from the virus chest (or i am doing it wrong). It puts back a folder with the same name but when opening, it is not recognized. Also, alarm bells keep going of cause it is still infected with a virus
The icons are there but they get removed once you click on them (even right click to see properties) When i search the HD for a specific document it does find it and i can open it. I think the virus was (is) in all the .exe folders on the desktop.
Is there no way to create new folders or change settings to go around the desktop icons?
I believe your files were just hidden and replaced by .exe files—it’s how most recycler malwares work anyway. Try changing your folder view settings.
Press Alt+T > Folder Options > View > Select “View hidden files and folders” > Uncheck “Hide protected operating system files” > Click OK
Check to see if there appeared folders that match your own. If it appeared, then your files are intact (but we could not assure it’s harmlessness yet). We’ll proceed with cleaning your PC.
UPD: Oops. Didn’t notice, essexboy was already in this thread. My job here is done.
