Restore Word files/documents to write instead of read only

I am using my late brother’s Gateway laptop from 2011 and have been using Avast Free Antivirus for 10 years. I am running the “original” Windows 7 Home Premium. Last week I finished a routine virus scan and a win.exe query came up. I answered “no.” Now all documents are read only. How do I restore them to the “write” configuration.
