returnil virtual system pe free

is any one trying this http://www.returnilvirtualsystem.com/index_files/rvspersonal.htm i’v installed it and it seems to run very good on my pc even with msn dialup  i’m still playing with it but it seems like a good thing to use

From what I’ve read, although it makes for a safe system, updates and changes become
very cumbersome.

so far what i’m doing is i get online and update my securty programs and stuff then get off line and restart the pc then turn returnil on it wants to restart and i’m virtual i guess that i can test programs this way and get viruses and stuff and when i restart the pc it’s all gone thats sort of cool and i see it’s not compatible with raid yet http://www.returnilvirtualsystem.com/index_files/faqs.htm#23

nice program very simple to use really nothing to configure, like sandboxie except you must reboot with retunil,i like sandboxie better because you dont have to reboot all the time

I’m testing and liking.
Although I intend to use just when trying (testing) software.

it is a good program but the thing i dont like is that you cant turn off protection(updating system & programs)on the fly you must reboot, you can turn on protection at any time.

is anything other than a firewall really needed if this program is set to protect all the time?

Did you test Windows SteadyState? Can it be turned off on-the-fly?

Well… if you’re not installing programs, if you have all programs in the same system partition and don’t update them, if you don’t use any infected document in other partition, well, maybe. For me, more than security, it brings a safe environment to test software (installation).

i found this at wilders security forums it mite be a good read about this program http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=178081 and http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=174636

tech i never tried windows steadystate,do you know if we can put programs like avast in the virtual partition(comes with returnil)so they can update without being lost at reboot,if so how?

I just removed it.
To stay safe, you have to lock up the barn and through away the key.
With any other settings, I’m still not any safer than with the current protection.
If I want to live dangerously, I’ll just use Sandboxie. ;D

Interesting (long) discussion at Wilders. Thanks urkingatu2.

I’m not sure that in the virtual partition avast would be able to load at boot time, scan at boot time, load low level drivers. So seems Microsoft tool allows special scripts to update the antivirus and Returnil doesn’t (yet).

yep i tried putting avast in vp and doesnt work

Hello Everyone,
Thank you for your interest in Returnil and forgive the late reply to your discussion.

Hello bri,

yep i tried putting avast in vp and doesnt work

Are you able to install Avast on an alternate partition (Data and/or Application partition)? If not, are you able to change the default signature save/load path in Avast?

Mike Wood
Returnil SIA

Yes, this is possible.

This is not allowed.

Congratulations for the Returnil program. I’m using and it does what it is supposed to do.
It’s a pity that it does not allow scripts to update programs in the system partition like Microsoft Windows SteadyState. But, on contrary, Returnil works better than MS tool, safer and with more flexibility in my opinion.

Hello Tech and thank you for the kind words.

The biggest issues are performance and storage space, especially if you have to “carry” multiple change images (different states like VMWare for example). We believe it is easier on the user and ultimately more efficient to guide her/him toward a more secure configuration that includes using alternate partitions to save their data and to install their antivirus.

Changing default installation paths is a security subject I think is not discussed or recommended enough. It is a simple thing to do and is not difficult to learn. It is also easier for the user if they understand that they can install thier antivirus on a partition other than the System without losing any effectiveness in their chosen AV - provided that the target partition loads with Windows…

Are there any subtle feature issues in Avast that would be affected by this configuration?

Mike

Yes, but not only data and antivirus could be updated… Nowadays, tons of legit programs update very frequent and it’s still a pain having to disable Returnil to get them updated. But again, it makes a safer test environment and I use it to install and test freewares frequently.

No, Mike. The installation path is not relevant for avast to work.
There are problems if the user uses accented characters in the path, but it’s an avast issue and it does not depend on which partition avast is installed.
