Rootkit Scan

I have a problem with avast scanner, when I look at the log viewer (under the notice tab) it says a rootkit scan was started but never completed. Is there a way that I can run a rootkit scan or is it the same as running a regular scan with avast?

The rootkit scan runs 8 minutes after boot. Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast ‘a’ icon), Warning section, this contains information on all avast detections. C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashLogV.exe

It will basically just look for hidden services and drivers, that’s it. I.e. it will take a list of loaded services and drivers (which means a list of roughly 200~ items) and compare these results with a low level scan. As I said, it should be fairly fast (not noticable).

The rootkit scan should not take place if you’re performing a “Quick” scan.
Also, the rootkit scan does not take place if you run the scan via ashQuick.exe (i.e. the avast Explorer context menu extension).
But it is done with a full avast scanning or a boot time scanning.
The details of detections in the boot-time scan are in C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\report\aswBoot.txt

Anti-rootkit scan log is in C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\aswAr.log.

My son recently added the free version of Avast to my new business computer. Now it periodically drops my internet session and starts running DOS version of Avast rootkit scan! (Like several times a day!) My wife (who is more computer savy than I am) has uninstallled it, reinstalled it, changed the settings to Not do a rootkit scan, ran another malware software and cleaned up some PUPs found, etc etc, and it still keeps happening! (About 3 days now) The quick scan shows everything OK, but then in the middle of my email or something, it will go to blue screen and run a DOS rootkit scan and reboot my computer!

Any idea what is happening? My wife’s computer has no trouble with this.

As Pondus stated avast free is for non-commercial use only.
