Router problem

Hi All; You have been fantastic in helping me before, one more time maybe??

I’ve tried turning off my avast but it doesn’t appear to make a difference.

Been trying to get a router onto my system, my technical support keep coming up with the same suggestions;
All seemingly wired up and ready to log in to the router, but then when I open up “Obtain an IP address automatically” and the number appears, which I try to key into my browser - firefox or IE - they try to go online, which of course they can’t as the router is not configured; instead of connecting to the router.

Catch 22; and I bin ‘catchin’ it all day yesterday!! Needless to say the ‘login to the router’ window never appears…

My router is tp-link 642 and operating system windows 2000 pro.

My current modem has an ethernet cable into the tower, and a smaller phone cable from the modem into the box. There is only one ethernet cable point on my tower, so i was told to put it into the router, and one from the router back to the modem.

And though the IP addresses come up in 'obtain an IP address, I cannot then log on to the router, instead I get a warning message about multiple gateways???

I have never seen both my Local Area Connections enabled at the same time until today, which strikes me as very odd and rather disconcerting that someone else might be using my pc.

Anyone, if so thanks!!

Hello!

Your router should have a port called “WAN”

Your modem should be plugged into the WAN port.

All PC’s should plug into the LAN ports, a typical router has 4 LAN ports.

First step, Make sure your modem is plugged in the WAN port and your PC into a LAN port.

Routers and modems often come configured from the factory with the same IP address: 192.168.0.1

If both are connected to your computer and neither address has been changed it can lead to confilicts. Try disconnecting the modem and see if you can log into the router. If you can, change its address to 192.168.0.2, then reconnect the modem.

Thanks for answers. I’m a little scared to disable the modem completely (as opposed to turning it off) but if there is a conflict because of similar numbers, as you suggest and i will try, that might be the answer. I tried it with the router on and modem off, no joy.

I must be so close, >:( but when I put the number into IE or Firefox it tries to connect to the internet which of course it can’t, instead of bringing up the log in to router window!

I haven’t had any message to recognize new hardware.

To test this all you need do is disconnet the cable between the modem and router.

If you do change the router’s address you may need to reboot afterwords.

If you have just the router connected to your PC, what IP address does it assign to your netowrk card?

Class guys! ;D
Up and running! Made one silly mistake I haven’t ‘secured’ the network because I asked windows to remember my password; so now others can use it. How might I secure it?
Thanks.

How about changing the password but this time don’t have Windows remember it.
