I have the free version of Avast!, and last night when it updated to the newest version (through the auto update) is when everything started to go wrong: constant freezing of applications, windows crashing, and black screen throughout processes (shutting down and rebooting computer would take forever, sometimes desktop wouldn’t even load) I had to go into safemode on my laptop to uninstall avast!. Once removed, computer was back to normal. Went to the website to download directly a new download and once installed, same problems returned and once in regular mode wasn’t able to do anything, had to go back into safe mode to uninstall. Did the reinstall twice, same issues. Never have had a problem with Avast! before…now just am bummed I have no antivirus while bugs on software are being worked out :-\ No interest in going to any other product, when Avast (even the free version) is the best I have ever used. Any ideas on what I should do?
Yes, sir! Remove 7 (ASWclear.exe supports 7, that’s avast removal tool) and go back to 6. Then do not upgrade until these forums are happy. I expect several months, or so!
Ok. Since I did the install of the new version from the site, after having problems from updating to the 7 version from an the 6
(and did an uninstall) how do I go back and find a previous version? I know this may sound like a stupid question, but I am not extremely tech savvy (so go easy on me! 8) ). If you could post some instructions I would so appreciate it, and would be very thankful! I appreciate the feedback no matter how direct advantage77, so thanks so much! I can be content with just keeping the 6 version and waiting a few months. I just don’t like going out with antivirus and like I said, I have been very happy with this free version for a few years now.
I got an older version 6 from Filehippo. Everytime I try to run it the first thing it does is download the latest version. I cannot install a version 6. It’s forcing 7 on me.
Yes I used the uninstall tool. Yes I did it in safe mode then rebooted.
I know exactly how you feel, it was doing fine already with Avast 6 until when I updated it through the program itself, by the way, I’m on windows 7.
The first issue I encountered was the pop-up that keeps telling me “complete your upgrade to avast”, everytime you startup, by clicking finish button, it did nothing, if you reboot again, it still keeps on showing. I also experience the freeze/lock-up issue you are experiencing.
The pop-up issue was resolved by uninstalling the avast and re installing it with a new copy from avast site. But the thing that made me which to MSE (Microsoft Sec. Essentials) was the freeze/lock-up I experiencing, my machine was down to its knees that I cannot perform any single task. I think it has something to do with Avast 7 and some windows 7 machines, probably not being compatible.
By the way, I tried to install Avast 7 on a Windows XP machine and it was all good, no pop-up and no freeze/lockup.
try this:
before you open the avast! 6 installation, make sure your firewall blocks any outgoing connection from the installation (avast.setup).
after install is finished, make sure that in the avast settings, updater isn’t installing by itself, just swap it to update-on-demand (VPS will be automatically updated and you shouldn’t worry about that at all).
well guys, if u want to make a bug report, please put a more informative title, eg. remote assistance crashes on (fill in ur operating system) followed by error report
then for details, u can add a screenshot of the problem, state what other programmes ur running, eg. antispyware, firewall (basically anything that runs on system startup)
please also give the support ppl sometime to see ur topic! they are not robots :
The only version 6 installer we got to work was 6.0.1387 and we could not find it online, but I had it! Every other version updates to avast 7 on installation, unless you unplug your ethernet cable, and supply license file during installation (gets around trial bug), then open avast!, go to settings, Updates, and change program to manual. There are known cases where avast 7 installed automatically, even though Updates , Program was set to “Ask when update is available”
******** I am supporting thousands of networks. Excuse me for telling the truth. But that is how you keep clients for 40 years, by telling the truth. NOTHING that is new, has been debugged. I am not into making business clients guinea pigs. All I did on Friday was avast! tech support! The update popup needs to state that this is a major release. Avast 6 took several months to become stable enough for business users. I am now going back to support avast resellers with avast 7 issues.

Thats great for your customers, good that you are so dedicated, but when you come here, you are helping Avast! customers, not you own, the vast majority are home users. And advice like “update in several months” (ridiculous) or “when the forums are happy” (even more ridiculous) does not help.
