Safe mod is active, yet no Avast installed

Hello,

Last night I was trying to update from Avast! 4.8 to Avast 5.0, I download the package as normal, and expect Avast to remove 4.8, yes that worked fine, after I started up Avast 5.0 it said I didn’t ahve any sheilds active, and a thread suggested I download and use “~forejt/aswClear.exe” program.
I downloaded it as usual, but once I tell it I want to use it, it sends a popup with the message

“The Avast! self protection mode is enabled. For this reason the operation cannot be completed”
Run your PC in safe mode, or disable the safe mode"

The problem here is, I DON’T have any Avast on my PC, as I had deleted it after it didn’t work properly yesterday via add/remove programs, windows security center still recognizes I have 4.8 [VPS 000000.0]

So right now, I’m unprotected and I would rather get 5.0 than have to install 4.8 again.

An help, assistance or guidance is much appreciated.

enter safe mode and run the removers for the two versions:4.8,and 5
then install a fresh avast 5

How exactly do I enter safe mode, because the F8 button doesn’t work when u restart the PC.

Im on XP SP3

Do you have a PS/2 keyboard?

A USB keboard is not active in Safe Mode.

An adapter can be purchased at a local PC store for conversion:

install sas from start->sas then search for safe boot and go from there"i dont remember what the options"

This will probably be more confusing than helpful, but i’m sure you can set your computer to boot into safe mode from msconfig

Thank you, that got me exactly into safe mode, I know how to use msconfig, just not any other way with modern pc’s.

superhacker, thank you I’ve removed it an installed a new package and it works perfectly.

Thank you for your help guys, it’s much appreciated
