I have decided that this is another feature in AIS that I will not use for the following reason. You can’t download anything and expect to find it anywhere afterwards. I tested it with the download from Piriform for the free CCleaner. I was in IE9 and it was sandboxed. When the the download box came up, I clicked to save as and told it to go to my documents folder. It claimed it had succeeded but would not show the download as existing in documents. The option to download files outside the sandbox was selected. I tried it again and it asked if I wanted to replace the existing file, which was invisible. Something is very wrong here.
UPDATE: I tried it again but this time just chose save and it downloaded to the default downloads folder and this time was visible and accessible. Apparently it only works if the downloads go to the default Windows location. This is still not acceptable to me since I very often do not want downloads going there. For example, I download updated addons for my games and I want to be able to have them go into the folder I have designated for them or at least into the Documents folder. I don’t want to have to search for them in Downloads and cut and paste them where I want them to be. Browser sandboxing is out for me if it works like this.
I tested this just now. I am using the most recent Chrome though. I usually default my downloads to the download folder so I switched the set “ask where to save”. Save ccleaner to downloads and desktop and both were successful. I am going to try IE9 next to see if I can duplicate it.
I just tried with Chrome in the sandbox and I can save it and access it anywhere. The problem is only with IE9 and really needs to be addressed. I really don’t see much value in sandboxing the browser anyway though since all of the other components of Avast in conjunction with the built in security of all of the current browsers should be more than sufficient for protection IMO.
I’m exactly the opposite, using Chrome, especially for downloads, makes me realize why IE9 is my default browser. ;D Firefox I just plain have never liked at all.
I have used every IE version since 4 as my default but have always updated to the latest one as soon as possible with the only exception being when going from 6 to 7. They changed the UI so much in 7 that I resisted changing for about a year. I just didn’t like how they minimalized things. Now 9 is extremely minimalized but I like it. It has the largest viewing window of all the browsers when you hide all of the bars. I don’t let any show, not even the status bar. That’s another thing I dislike about Chrome, the stupid bookmarks bar. I hide it and have an addon called bookmarks menu that works great.
Me too. I’m becoming more and more frustrated and disillusioned with running Firefox in the Sandbox. Sending Hotmail attachments (and other uploads to website servers etc.) hasn’t work for ages and downloaded files sometimes do and sometimes don’t appear in the designated directory.
It’s a shame that these problems (reported a long time ago) have not even elicited an acknowledgement let alone a suggested fix from !avast because, having suffered attacks in the past, the Sandbox concept appeals to me (even if it’s irrational) - and !avast have been screaming at me for the last two weeks to renew…!
