says cant scan

any reason to worry scans come up clean

Hi mark5019,

It looks like the beginning of ‘archive is password protected…’

avast! will not be able to scan it because it doesn’t have the password

Just because a file cannot be scanned, does not mean that it is suspicious, infected. It just means that it cannot be scanned.

As a side note, next time please could you crop the image to show only the relvant parts of the image. This reduces the sizze of the image that has to be downloaded and is of real benefit to those here that are still on Dial Up.
Thanks

Lots of posts on this topic and it hasn’t changed.

Files that can’t be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.

Many programs (usually security based ones) password protect their files for legitimate reasons such as AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy, there are others (and avast doesn’t know the password or have any way of using it even if it did know it).

When you run scans with the above programs and you delete harmful entries that they detect, a copy is kept (in quarantine/restore/backup) in case you need to reverse what you did. These are usually password protected, you should do some housekeeping and delete old backup/recovery/quarantine entries (older than two weeks or so), this will reduce the numbers of files that can’t be scanned.

By examining 1) the reason given by avast! for not being able to scan the files, 2) the location of the files, you can get an idea of what program they relate to. You may need to expand the column headings to see all the text.

If you can give some examples of those file names, the locations and reason given why it can’t be scanned might help us further ?

sorryi didnt think in 2009 any body used dial up

You would be surprised just how many do still have to use it, me for one.

I have dialup but not by choice. It’s the only option in a lot of areas.

The most relevant part of the image seems to be blocked by that popup.

Contrary to popular belief, some files simply can’t be scanned. But’s it’s not really a problem because even if they are infected, there’s no danger unless they’re executed, in which case the Resident Scanner will pick them off.
