Scan slows down and takes forever

My scan times are way to long, I started a scan last night before I went to bed.
This morning I got up and checked the computer scan time 9 hr 50 min for
12% complete at 665kb per second.
Avast Internet Security. My computer runs Windows vista, 70 g hd, 40 g is free.

and what type of scan is that quick / full / custom ? default settings or not ?

full default

Any more hardware specifications?
Are you sure you’re not running on economizer profile? or that your PC didn’t suspend overnight?

Look at my sig for hardware and OS info but it took my avast 30 min. 34 secs. to do a 950 GB full scan with PUP enabled. Two 1 TB drivers with data (both at half capacity) and a 320 GB HDD for windows with 60 GB of data on it.

Your speeds are wayyyy too slow.

Martin.-

quick scan runs ok , finishes in an hour.
Full scan runs ok until about 11% scanned then it slows down and its almost like it stops.

As strange as it sounds, what is your firewall ?

I was talking about a full scan on my post. See that you do a quick scan twice as slow as I do a full scan with a tenth of the space.
But can you see on the Scan window where it slows? Maybe it is trying to unpack some file and that is causing the problem.

Martin.-

Avast firewall.
I have not tweaked anything since installing Avast Internet Security.
I usually start the scan and walk away or scan at night so I have no idea when it
really starts to slow down. I am going to try a scan now and see what happens.

OK I was thinking zone alarm as there is one of the system restore logging files that it seems to hook which can on occasion freeze a scan.

There is something certainly wrong as I’ve seen people reporting 30GB of data scanned in well under an hour.
When it appears to have frozen, what folder/file was the last one scanned ?
When it appears to have frozen, what are the CPU % and RAM usage reported in the task manager ?

What was your AV before installing avast and how did you get rid of it ?

What other security applications do you have installed, e.g. anti-spyware, etc. ?

I ran a boot-time scan and found a file infected with a win32:
Next I ran a full system scan.
At 4% scanned, scan was running at 23 mbps
At 11% scanned, scan was running at 13 mbps
At 37% scanned, scan was running at 11 mbps, 45 minutes , 28 gb , 176000 files, 9100 files
Scan completed in 1:08 , 44 GB , 218000 files, 19500 folders

Thanks for your replies.

The win32 is going to be on virtually every detection as that is the OS platform it targets. so doesn’t provide any help unfortunately.

Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\report\aswBoot.txt file, check this file using notepad for info on the boot-time scan/detections, etc.

Please answer the questions I asked in my last post.
