Scaning a file to make sure that it is clean

Hi I just installed Avast and I am new to this forum.
I had AVG previously and I was able to scan a new file that someone had sent me, by right clicking on the file and then scanning that file with AVG.
I am not able to scan the file with Avast, It does tell me how many files are being scanned, but the scan progress stays at 0, and I am getting no results for the scan. What am I doing wrong?

You are doing nothing wrong.If you right click and select scan with Avast.If it finds nothing wrong it will not say anything.So if Avast has done what you said then it found nothing amiss.

To change the default settings - right click the avast ‘a’ icon, Program Settings, Common section, Show Explorer Extension Results.
