I think my grandson has a virus somewhere. Problem is that the computer boots up with the options displayed but when any of them is selected it starts to load Win XP and then re-boots.
safe mode, safe mode with networking and safe mode with command prompt don’t work and start normally works for a while then drops out.
I have Ultimate Boot CD but that doesn’t seem to get me into the DOS.
Any suggestions how to scan this comoputer would be helpful.

avast has a boot time scanning feature… I think it will be better than ‘dos’ version.
Are you using Windows XP?
Can you schedule a boot-time scanning?
Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning.
Select for scanning archives.
Boot.

Or just run:
C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4\sched.exe /A:*
