Does Avast Free version 4.6 scan in real time, files that are being downloaded from a site, via right click and save (internet explorer), to the hard drive please?

If you have the Web Shield set to Use Intelligent Stream Scanning, files are scanned as they are downloaded. If Intelligent Stream Scanning is turned off, the whole file will be downloaded and then scanned.

In fact, like Mauserme said, WebShield will scan before the file is save and Standard Shield (if you do not use WebShiel) will do it when the file is saved.
There is not a context menu for that. You should use Siteadvisor add-on and DrWeb hyperlink scanner plug-in to avoid infected downloads.
