I am new to Avast and maybe I have something set wrong so I was hopeing someone could help.
I have version 4.8.1229 and when I do a scan of my system it is very slow, I have let it go for 14 hours and it only gets 5% of my files scanned, I have it set to quick scan and standard protection.
If I do a boot time scan it takes about 10 mins, so I am hopeing I am doing something wrong.
System specs.
P4 3.0ghz dual processor 800ghz bus
2 gigs of pc3200 800ghz memory
300 gig sata drive 130 gigs used
I would surmise this is your reason, although, if you have used other AV’s that scanned this amount of data much quicker, I’m not sure why this would be taking place.
I had Trend Micro before this and it would take about 1 1/2 hours to scan.
I did an uninstall and then used system mechanic to clean the reg.
I have Spyware Doctor 6 and using the windows firewall
I went to start avast antivirus, then went to the local disks button pick quick scan, did not click the scan archives, then clicked on the green arrow to scan.
I don’t know if there might be remnants of Trend Micro installed (even after system mechanic), perhaps there is an uninstall utility on the Trend web site, if so download that and run it just to be on the safe side.
If spyware doctor is running resident in the background it may have an impact, try pausing it or temporarily disabling the resident protection and see if that has any effect.
OK that scan selection even with 130GB should take nothing like the time it took, with your system spec. Even if it were a sata 1 HDD (or even IDE) there shouldn’t be a bottleneck in file access.
I don’t know if you have done a defrag recently, if your HDD is highly fragmented that could have an impact on scanning.
