scanning with avast SEEMS SLOW

i have a compaq presario, 40 gig hard, 384 ram.
ME operating system (no problems with it )
start up only initializes SystemTray, ScanRegistry, StateMgr, LoadPowerProfile, ZoneAlarm Pro 5.5, and TrueVector (another ZA file) which leaves me about 81% free resources.

Avast takes 81 min to scan 118k files in 81 min.
does that seem reasonable? slow ?

generally Avast responds slowly on my pc: i click a button and it takes many seconds for the button to respond with the window for that button.

any ideas ? comments ? suggestions?

Hi,
do you defrag your HDD?
do you use AD-Aware or Spybot recently?

thanx for responding.
i defrag weekly; sometimes 2x.
ZoneAlarm is running all the time.
nothing else is running.

when all updates have been installed to Norton, Avast, Spybot, SpySweeper and Ad-Aware, i begin to run each of them separately, then reboot, then run the next one, reboot, etc.
Avast just seems to do its job slowly. mind you, only ZA is running.

i’ve never had a virus, trojan, worm, etc; very few spying files.

maybe it is just my perception and expectation.

I think it is caused by the fact that you have both Avast and Norton installed.
I suggest you to completely remove Norton since it is know for lagging a system.
How to do so is explaind in many other threads on this board.
Let’s see if that solves it.

i think i can uninstall Norton. i will look for the threads about uninstalling it. i have Norton Professional because it is free due to corporate agreement with Symantec. (i work at a superlarge areospace engineering co.)

as you state BOTH Norton and Avast are installed, but neither of them are running at the same time. ever. i rely on the firewall to keep things out; scan ALL downloaded files prior to opening, with Norton and Avast.

like i said i have never had a problem with my computer. but i think i would call this “a problem” because it seems so slow to anything else i run.

thanx, i’ll look for the Norton uninstall provedures.

Re-Hi!

when all updates have been installed to Norton
You don't need (and you surely know that's rather dangerous) to use TWO AV on the same system...'cause of conflict...
i begin to run each of them separately
in spit of the fact you run AV separately... I don't know what is the minimun RAM needed for Avast!, but I rather sure this is not the PB...I don't know one more thing: have you got a task manager on ME? if yes, have a look on it, to see exactly how many memory is using by each application... Hope this help you :)

i am aware that it is bad/dangerous to have 2 AV running at the same time (in the background or foreground) but i didn’t understand that it was dangerous just to have the software in the harddrive. these guys don’t run until i turn them on. neither is running now. only things running are Netscape (to talk with you), Avast Simple user interface, Avast simple user interface, ZLclient and the systemtray.

i cannot find the system manager to determine how much memory is being used by which applications/programs. i have seen it before, but don’t know where or how.

thanx for all your input.

Usually when you install avast it checks for the presence of other AVs and if it finds them it usually doesn’t fully install to avoid conflict.
The installer is dumb it doesn’t know your intentions, the fact that the program isn’t currently running is no guarantee that it won’t be run. Conflict between two AVs could lock up your system.

Of all the ex Norton users that frequent these forums, the major thing they say is avast is much lighter on system resources and is not such a hog.

Just for the info a scan on my machine which has about 110 gb of data and a little more than 250000 files with archive scaning and thorough scaning enabled about 3 hours!
