scheduled updates possible?

If I dont want automatic updates, yet want say update to occur only once a day (computer boots up) is this posisble in FREE AVAST 5 version? if so, how? cant seem to find it anywhere. thanks.

You can’t directly set that.
You can set avast to update each 24hours (24x60x60 seconds).
But why don’t you want to use the automatic mode?

Maybe you can do that using ashUpd.exe with TaskScheduler.

Usage from ashUpd.exe help message:

ashUpd.exe vps [/silent [/nodetails]] [/autoreboot] [/help]
ashUpd.exe program [/silent [/nodetails]] [/autoreboot] [/help]

/silent – do not display the GUI and modal Summary screen
/nodetails – do not print the console summary in silent mode
/autoreboot – reboot the computer after update, if necessary
/help – display this help screen

Good shot NON. I’ve forgotten that one.

Reason I would like to schedule updates as opposed to automatic checking is I don’t want any intererence from antivirus while video editing, burning, converting video. I usually shut off all sheilds too when I’m doing those 3. Is this something that you guys wouldn’t recommend and that those 3 things would be fine with avast 5 running with sheilds and updates?

My system is a quad core q6600, 4gb ram, windows vista 64bit, 500gb sata drive, ati radeon 4870 1gb video card.

::slight_smile:
Even on my PC (see my signature, with SINGLE CORE CPU!), I have no burning fail so far with all shields on. (Of course I don’t use my pc during it.)
AFAIK, avast!5 update process (avast.setup) works with “Less Normal” priority, and avast! doesn’t scan video files… so I don’t think it disturbs you.

My PC is slow and unresponsive first thing in the morning. This lasts roughly until Avast has finished doing its updates. I would prefer to schedule updates to run automatically at mid-day. Any ideas how I can do this (without using scheduler).

To the avast team: If this isn’t a feature, it should be!

Avast normally puts out definitions updates twice a day (AM and PM), but occasionally this will vary. When you boot up your machine in the morning, you are most likely getting the AM update. To avoid the “automatic” update and run it when you want it at mid-day, change your settings:

Open the Avast GUI > Settings > Updates > Engine and Virus Definitions > Change from “Automatic” to “Ask When an Update is Available” or “Manual Update.” You will then force an update: Maintenance > click Update Engine and Virus Definitions at the time that is convenient for you. If you fail to do it in the afternoon, the evening definitions update will give you the entire update for the day.

I do all my decrypting, burning and converting with dvdfab and imgburn and never had to turn off updating or realtime from avast or malwarebytes so you should be fine.

To delay the update of avast into a permanent internet connection (DSL) you can change the value AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds into avast5.ini file.

For XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5

Sure, just change (or add) AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds value into the [InetWD] section of avast5.ini file.
You could set the number of seconds to wait before attempting to update. The default is 30 but it may not be enough in some DSL systems. In this case, you can try increasing this e.g. to 60 (1 minute). That should be enough.
